    Rivian R2: More Versions Coming?

    • Rivian is considering other R2 variants.
    • The CEO said ‘there could be an R2X,’ but that he didn’t want to give away too many details.
    • R2 deliveries begin soon.

Rivian hasn’t even started delivering the R2, yet CEO RJ Scaringe is already thinking about what comes next. The automaker is already considering other R2 variants, like a performance-oriented R2X and a pickup.

In an interview with Reuters, Scaringe revealed that there are other variants of the R2 that the company hasn’t yet announced. He did not provide any specifics, but said, “Clearly, there could be an R2X. There are going to be combinations. I want to be careful not to announce the program.”

    The Upcoming R2

The R2 is already shaping up to be the brand’s most important vehicle, with Rivian looking to increase sales via the more mainstream (and more affordable) crossover. The first R2 to go on sale, the Performance trim, starts at just under $60,000, with the entry-level model launching next year.

According to Scaringe, “What we’re building in Georgia allows for different variations.” What kind of variants Rivian is thinking of remains a mystery.

The R2X that he hinted at seems quite likely. During the launch of the R2, Rivian introduced another new model, the R3, and it debuted in its R3X performance trim. The crossover had chunkier tires, a raised ride height, and extra cladding, and it might not be alone.

In 2024, a trademark filing revealed that Rivian had applied for the R1X name, suggesting the automaker is developing a range of rugged vehicles. If so, an R2X feels inevitable at this point, but we will likely learn more once Rivian begins R2 deliveries, which should be soon.

Motor1’s Take: It’s unclear how many R2 variants Rivian is considering, but it will be its first mainstream vehicle designed to appeal to the masses. The automaker billed the R1 as a high-end adventure vehicle for the well-to-do, but now it needs to increase sales through a popular mass-market vehicle, and one way to do that is to offer several versions of the model.
