It was back in May that hit Prime Video show The Boys finally came to an end after five successful seasons. First airing back in 2019 and based on the comic book series of the same name, The Boys follows a team of vigilantes who must take on superheroes who are seen as the villains in the show’s setting. With the ‘Supes’ being nothing more than arrogant, corrupt celebrities, it is up to the vigilante group known as The Boys to stop them in their tracks.
Known for a whole lot of blood and gore, satirical themes, action sequences and star-studded cast, The Boys has bagged itself four Emmy Awards over the years, as well as multiple other rewards which praise the show’s unique take on the superhero genre. However, with the show coming to an end earlier this year, there is a massive gap to fill for fans.
Luckily, it is not all doom and gloom, as The Boys: Trigger Warning is now here, a canonical stealth-action VR game by ARVORE and Sony Pictures Virtual Reality. Released back in March, the synopsis for the VR title set in The Boys universe reads as follows:
“Developed with the creators and featuring cast from the hit series, “The Boys: Trigger Warning” plunges you into the gloriously twisted world of The Boys. This time, you’re not watching the chaos—you’re in it: close-up, personal, and dangerously real.
Lucas Costa’s life detonates when the Armstrongs—a washed-up but still lethal family of Vought Superheroes—turn a family outing into carnage. The Boys drag Lucas back from the brink, juice him with powers, and throw him headfirst into their filthy underground war against Vought and its Supes. With Butcher and Mother’s Milk guiding from the shadows, Lucas sets off on a no-mercy hunt to put the Armstrongs in the ground.”
Despite featuring an all-new story and canon events from the hit Prime Video show, it seems as though The Boys: Trigger Warning is not living up to the hype, with players criticizing its poor optimization, steep price point, and poor gameplay and story. Not only that, but with the game recasting some of the hit characters, such as Billy Butcher, who was expertly portrayed by Karl Urban in the show, one Reddit user even claimed that they could do a “better impression” of Butcher themselves.
It is over on Reddit that players have flocked to express their disappointment in The Boys: Trigger Warning, with one user sharing, “Yes, the game has many cameos, and if you enjoy the brutality of the series, then this is definitely for you… But the amount of issues, bugs and crashes experienced during review was astoundingly high considering who the developer is. Unless you have an astounding amount of patience – or luck that helps you avoid issues – you’ll most certainly get frustrated.”
Although we do not expect any masterpieces when it comes to VR releases, it is a shame that a show as loved as The Boys has fallen victim to this ongoing trend. Hopefully, this is not the end for the franchise as a whole.
