Social Platforms Now Labeling AI Content

Now, social media platforms like YouTube and Facebook (and its subsidiary Instagram) are requesting users to label content that’s been created or modified using some form of artificial intelligence.

The move follows the announcement in February by India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology that it would introduce tougher regulations requiring platforms with more than 50 Lakh users to deploy systems for filtering out unlabeled AI-media.

Under the modifications, users sharing photos, videos or audio that have been substantially edited using A.I. tools must label them as such.

Platforms are also changing policies surrounding those with initially five million users in India.

What impresses me most here is how quickly the distinction between “real” and “AI-created” is blurring – and how platforms are trying to keep up.

We’ve seen companies like TikTok release tools that allow you to control how much AI-generated content you see or to add invisible watermarks to track whether a video was made by AI.

This is a big shift for anyone who creates content, watches it or uses social media for work. So if a brand shares an AI-edited image without disclosing that, it could mean penalties – or just diminished trust.

On the downside, users may begin taking a closer look at what they are shown and wondering: “Is this really made by a human?”

Personally, I’m glad the platforms are doing this – but labelling alone won’t be a magic bullet.

Detection tech should get better, creators still need to be transparent, and users will need to stay on their toes.

As the deluge of AI-talk becomes only more intense, it seems likely that we’ll see more rules, more controls, and (yes) inevitably also a little bit more chaos.
