PlayStation Officially Shutting Down 6 Games Forever, Last Chance To Play

Six PlayStation games are going off the market forever this May and June, but what that means for each of them is different. Suffice it to say that it’ll be a difficult summer for PlayStation: first, they announced another price increase for their consoles in Southeast Asia markets this May.

Then, they rolled out controversial age verification tech, followed by a confusing update to DRM that could lock some players out of their newly purchased games if they don’t connect online for 30 days. Although it’s not really Sony’s decision, PS5 players may find their libraries a bit smaller with the removal of six games over the next few months.

PlayStation Says Goodbye To Six More Games

    What The Shutdowns Mean

According to Game Rant, the following six games will be shutting down on PS5 in May and June:

    Rec Room

May 1 (online purchases disabled; June 1 (server shutdown)

    Pinball FX3

    May TBD

    Pinball FX

    June 1

    Pinball M

    June 1

    Horizon Chase Turbo

    June 1

    Battlefield Hardline

May 22 (delisted); June 22 (server shutdown)

Of course, what this really means for each game is different, so let’s run through them. Online purchases for the free-to-play Rec Room will become unavailable this Friday, followed by a total server shutdown on June 1. This is due to a wider server shutdown for Rec Room on all platforms.

That’s a big blow to Rec Room, which is essentially a VR Roblox clone. After the server shutdown, you’ll no longer be able to visit other players’ “rooms” or invite them to rooms you’ve created. The game will still technically be playable: you’ll be allowed to visit any rooms you’ve cached on your local device before the shutdown, but only in single-player.

Next we have a trio of pinball games by Zen Studios, a Hungarian developer that specializes in just that. Pinball FX and Pinball M will remain available for purchase on the PlayStation Store, and will remain totally playable; you’ll also be able to purchase DLC content, which includes a variety of licensed pinball machines, as usual.

However, Pinball FX and Pinball M will no longer receive new content or updates after June 1. That shouldn’t affect you for the time being, but if a future PlayStation update renders them unplayable, you’ll be out of luck.

Pinball FX3 and the arcade racing game Horizon Chase Turbo, meanwhile, will be delisted from the PlayStation Store sometime in May and on June 1, respectively. As a result, these will no longer be available for download after their respective delisting dates, so if you want them in your libraries, you’ll need to pick them up before it’s too late.

Finally, we have Battlefield Hardline, which is set for delisting on May 22, followed by a total server shutdown on June 22. This is the black sheep of the franchise, introducing several new game modes and shifting focus in multiple ways. It’ll still be playable even after its server shutdown, but only in its single-player campaign mode; but if you want to be able to play it on PlayStation at all, you’ll need to have it in your library prior to its May 22 delisting.
