Over 548,463 Ford Expedition SUVs are being recalled due to an issue with the center console. The recall covers certain models manufactured between 2018 and 2024 whereby the center console chrome could peel away, leaving behind edges that could cause significant harm to occupants.
The documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show almost 12.8% of the recalled vehicles may have the defective center console. The documents state that the center console’s chrome plating may bubble and, with time, peel, leaving behind uncovered sharp edges that could result in injuries.
According to NHTSA, the peeling chrome may have been manufactured with parameters that failed to meet Ford’s specifications. A total of 65 injuries and 1 accident that are related to the defect have been reported, and as of 2nd June this year, Ford was aware of 34 reports from the customer call center, 150 field reports, and about 4634 warranty reports globally that are related to the peeling chrome.
The documents also include the steps to get the problem fixed whereby owners will be instructed to take their Expedition to their nearest dealership where a technician will do inspections to the car’s center console, where they will replace it if it is building or peeling chrome.
As of now, dealerships have been notified, with interim owner notification mail expected to be sent as of June 29, although the actual remedy later won’t be sent out until January 29, 2027.
