Rivian has added a new Apple Watch app update that lets you connect and control seamlessly with features on the R1. The new app is launching just when Rivian is preparing to roll out its 2026.03 OTA, which will be bringing improvements like a revamped Kneel Mode and better cold-weather range transparency.
The new mobile app update that includes a companion app for Apple Watch
With the new Apple Watch app, you can access essential features without the need of carrying around your iPhone. With just a simple tap, you can unlock or lock the doors, sound the alarm, or even open the windows.
Gen1 drivers can now unlock and lock their vehicles by just tapping the lock icon, and the app opens as well as the car getting you ready for the next adventure. For Gen 2 customers, they have passive entry; after your digital key is configured with your Rivian, once you approach it, it will automatically unlock. Rivian has promised that there will be more to come, and their Apple Watch app may be updated over time, bringing up new features and designs that will improve user experience.
Sport Mode Update
Moreover, Rivian has also added Sport mode to all variants, including the performance model and the base Dual-Motor models, which means that Gen 1 and Gen 2, as well as the NMC and LFP battery configurations, will benefit from the update. When sport mode is selected, it unlocks optimized power delivery and enables quick acceleration compared to regular driving mode. You can now adjust the ride height to “standard” when sport mode is active; this comes after several feedback from drivers who liked the responsiveness of sport mode but preferred the look and feel of a higher ride.
Launch mode update
The other update is the launch mode, in which it gets the vehicle ready for a sprint while in a standstill position. The launch mode for now has been expanded to all variants and generations of the Ev; unlike before, it was only offered on second-generation Quad Motor R1 and R1S. To start the launch mode, the driver will need to select the sport mode, press the flag icon, and then hold the brake and the accelerator simultaneously and make sure you are on a clear, flat surface and check vehicle surroundings beforehand so that you can launch responsibly.
The knee mode update
Rivian’s flagship model will also get an update on the knee mode, where it will have a “lower” setting. The update will be capable of making the vehicle lower by an extra inch depending on your variant and tires. This will be of help, especially when entering and exiting; now it will be easier. The R1 had high ground clearance that led to high seat positioning, making it so hard for many entering or exiting the vehicle.
On driver help, changing drive modes, for example, from all-purpose to conserve, and various car settings, like the ride height and ride comfort, will not disengage the Highway Assist and Universal Hands-Free advanced driver assistance systems.
Cold Weather Improvements
And lastly, the new update on the transparency of the winter effect on your range: Rivian has introduced a cold weather indicator to the battery icon on the screen and in the Energy App that shows the total energy used to keep the vehicle’s battery warm. This is shown by blue shading graphics on the driver display and in the mobile app, letting him know—letting you know—if some range is temporarily unavailable until the pack reaches its optimal operating temperature.
