Hyundai Could Be Saying Goodbye To Pixel Lights On Future Ioniq EVs

The company’s lineup of Ioniq-branded EVs have been praised for their combination of great range, satisfying performance, speedy charging, and relatively low prices. But they also turned heads thanks to their throwback-futuristic designs that prominently feature pixelated light arrays and swoopy body creases. And now Hyundai may be starting a new visual chapter for its Ioniq lineup. The automaker recently gave us a preview of two intriguing concept vehicles.

We know precious little about either study for the moment, Hyundai shared two images and gave them two names. One is named Venus, the other is named Earth. We will have to wait and see how Lucid Automobiles feels about the latter as the American company is working on its own new electric crossover vehicle named Earth. Accompanying the image duo was this description: “Born as a statement from above. Made for humans. Represents a new beginning of the Ioniq odyssey.”

Hyundai wouldn’t say which name belongs to which concept, nor do the silhouette shots reveal too much detail. But one shot looks at a gold paint job from its rear quarter revealing a blacked-out center trunk area, skinny discreet taillamps that dip into the gold paint, and a tiny lip spoiler running across the flank of the vehicle. To that we add an ultra-aggressive fastback roofline.

On its nose is where we find our other teaser image which focuses on the front end of a silver study. Its lamps are made up of a thin horizontal row of LEDs with two angled LEDs shooting up and to the inside of each headlamp to form an arrow pointing toward the front of the car. We see a similar motif in the aggressive angles of the body lines just ahead of each forward-facing door. Our guess is this car has an extremely short hood and a sharply raked windshield that stretches far beyond the front door sills.

Judging these concepts’ classes is near impossible, but notice the black protective molding running across each of the silver car’s fenders? That generally hints at SUV form factor. Its forward-facing cockpit and angular lamps also remind us of another Kia concept we recently covered named the Meta Turismo. Details on where and when we can expect Venus and Earth to debut are still on the way, but we have a feeling both will arrive sometime this April at either the Beijing auto show or Milan Design Week. Stay tuned.
