8 DC Comics Heroes Stronger Than The Hulk

By now, it is well known that the Hulk is one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe. Although the Hulk embodies immense physical strength, a regeneration that most characters would envy, along with the ability to grow stronger as his rage mounts, these traits don’t necessarily make him the strongest of them all. While some Avengers can defeat the Hulk, the Jade Giant also faces the risk of defeat when squaring off against some of the most overpowered heroes from DC Comics.

Certain versions of the hero, such as World Breaker Hulk, rank among the strongest beings in comic book history. Yet, in recent years, various iterations of DC Comics heroes have demonstrated impressive feats, proving that they not only possess enough power to challenge the Hulk but could also emerge victorious in more than one confrontation.

Although he may not possess the popularity of the Man of Steel, Martian Manhunter is one of DC Comics’ heavy hitters, and even Superman himself once called him the most powerful being on Earth. J’onn J’onzz has several weapons in his arsenal, such as incredible physical strength, shape-shifting, and telepathy, along with a genius-level intellect proved by his experience as a detective, all abilities he could use to exploit weaknesses like the Hulk’s low IQ before the monster evolves into an unstoppable, raging threat.

    01

DC’s Absolute Universe is a new line of comics launched in late 2024 that reimagines iconic DC heroes in a world without the legacy advantages they traditionally have. Which DC event/storyline set up the creation of the Absolute Universe?

✓ Correct! The Absolute Universe was born from Darkseid rewriting reality in the current DC continuity. This cosmic act of villainy created a parallel world where DC’s greatest heroes exist without the advantages and support systems they traditionally rely on.

✗ That answer didn’t make it through the Absolute reboot! The answer is Darkseid’s rewriting of the DC Multiverse. While Dark Crisis, Infinite Frontier, and Flashpoint Beyond are all significant DC events, it was Darkseid’s manipulation of reality that gave birth to the Absolute Universe.

    02

In Absolute Superman, Kal-El’s origin is dramatically different from the main universe. Instead of being raised by the Kents in Smallville, how does Absolute Superman grow up?

✓ Correct! In the Absolute Universe, Kal-El lands not with the Kents but in an immigrant community, growing up without wealth or privilege. This reimagining strips away Superman’s traditional support system while keeping his core values of hope and justice intact.

✗ That answer didn’t make it through the Absolute reboot! The answer is that he’s raised in an immigrant community with no wealth or privilege. The Absolute line is built on the concept of heroes without their traditional advantages, and Superman’s new upbringing reflects this perfectly.

    03

Absolute Batman reimagines Bruce Wayne without his billionaire status. In this version, Bruce Wayne has a very different civilian occupation. What is Absolute Batman’s day job?

✓ Correct! In the Absolute Universe, Bruce Wayne works as an engineer and construction worker. Without the Wayne fortune or Wayne Enterprises, this Bruce builds his gear and gadgets with his own hands and working-class ingenuity, making him a truly self-made Batman.

✗ That answer didn’t make it through the Absolute reboot! The answer is engineer / construction worker. Absolute Batman strips Bruce Wayne of his billionaire status entirely. This Bruce is a massive, imposing figure who uses his engineering skills and physical labor background to craft his own Batman arsenal.

    04

Absolute Batman’s costume and physique are dramatically different from the traditional Batman. This version of Bruce Wayne is much larger and more imposing. Who is the writer of Absolute Batman?

✓ Correct! Scott Snyder, who previously wrote the acclaimed New 52 Batman run, is the writer of Absolute Batman. His bold reimagining of Bruce Wayne as a working-class hero without billions has been one of the breakout hits of the Absolute Universe line.

✗ That answer didn’t make it through the Absolute reboot! The answer is Scott Snyder. Known for his legendary Batman run featuring the Court of Owls and other iconic storylines, Snyder returned to the Dark Knight with Absolute Batman, completely reinventing Bruce Wayne for this new universe.

    05

Absolute Wonder Woman reimagines Diana in a significantly different setting. In this version, the character’s mythology and origin pull from different cultural influences. Who is the writer of Absolute Wonder Woman?

✓ Correct! Kelly Thompson writes Absolute Wonder Woman, bringing a fresh take on Diana’s mythology and origin. This version reimagines Wonder Woman’s world with different cultural influences while maintaining the warrior spirit at the core of the character.

✗ That answer didn’t make it through the Absolute reboot! The answer is Kelly Thompson. While all four writers are acclaimed in the comics industry, it’s Thompson who helms Absolute Wonder Woman, crafting a bold new vision for Diana in the Absolute Universe.

    06

The Absolute Universe was created as a result of Darkseid altering reality. A key difference is that in this universe, heroes don’t have the traditional advantages and support systems. What concept describes this — that these heroes exist without their usual “safety nets”?

✓ Correct! “Heroes without legacy” is the core concept of the Absolute Universe. These versions of DC’s iconic characters exist without the inherited advantages, mentors, wealth, and support networks that traditionally define them — forcing them to become heroes purely on their own terms.

✗ That answer didn’t make it through the Absolute reboot! The answer is “Heroes without legacy.” The Absolute Universe is built on the idea that Darkseid stripped these heroes of their legacies — Batman has no fortune, Superman has no Kents, Wonder Woman has no Themyscira as we know it.

    07

Absolute Flash reimagines Wally West in the Absolute Universe. In this version, the Flash’s connection to the Speed Force is portrayed differently. Who is the writer of Absolute Flash?

✓ Correct! Jeff Lemire, known for his deeply human storytelling in titles like Sweet Tooth and Animal Man, writes Absolute Flash. His take on Wally West reimagines the speedster’s relationship with the Speed Force in the context of the Absolute Universe’s stripped-down heroic landscape.

✗ That answer didn’t make it through the Absolute reboot! The answer is Jeff Lemire. While Williamson, Waid, and Adams have all written excellent Flash stories in the main continuity, it’s Lemire who brings his unique storytelling vision to Absolute Flash.

    08

Absolute Superman is written and drawn by a critically acclaimed creator who handles both the writing and art duties on the series. Who is this creator?

✓ Correct! Absolute Superman is written by Jason Aaron with art by Rafa Sandoval. Together they’ve crafted a powerful reimagining of Kal-El, placing him in an immigrant community without the Kent family’s support, creating one of the most compelling new takes on the character in years.

✗ That answer didn’t make it through the Absolute reboot! The answer is Jason Aaron (writer) with Rafa Sandoval (art). While Jim Lee, Grant Morrison, and Jorge Jiménez are all legendary DC creators, it’s the Aaron and Sandoval team that brings Absolute Superman to life.

Besides being incredibly versatile, one of Martian Manhunter’s key advantages over the Hulk is his ability to become completely intangible through molecular control. While the Hulk’s formidable defenses against phasing prevent the alien hero from directly altering the giant’s body, he can certainly withstand his brute-force attacks. Thus, as one of DC’s most powerful telepaths, Martian Manhunter could eventually take control of Hulk’s mind, which means he wins in most scenarios as long as they don’t involve fire.

    Zatanna

As one of DC Comics’ strongest magic users, Zatanna may not rival the Hulk in terms of raw strength, but she more than makes up for it with other abilities. The Hulk’s anti-magic powers have been a subject of debate, but modern comics depict him resisting Clea Strange’s spells. However, in addition to Zatanna’s logomancy, casting spells by speaking commands in reversed English even when unable to speak and limited only by her imagination, Zatanna can alter a person’s memories and personality and manipulate reality itself.

As a reality warper, Zatanna has many ways to fight the Hulk; she could use her dimensional powers against him or even employ spells, mind control, or illusion magic to simply calm him down. Zatanna also achieved metafictional feats that give her a significant edge over the Hulk, such as breaking the fourth wall to crumple the very panels during her fight against the Time Tailor Zor or stepping out of the comic book page to evade a devastating attack in Zatanna #5.

    Captain Atom

Captain Atom stands in front of his fellow DC heroes
Captain Atom stands in front of his fellow DC heroes

Nathaniel Adam, known as Captain Atom, ranks among the strongest superheroes of the Justice League along with Superman, whom he has even managed to defeat. Essentially composed of nuclear energy and linked to the quantum field, he’s inherently unstable but capable of manipulating energy, creating matter, and employing atomic transmutation. While Hulk boasts no upper limit, Captain Atom’s speed and density control would make it difficult for the Jade Giant to lay a hand on him. This means he could attack him using his molecular manipulation before Hulk powers up.

Captain Atom’s victory most likely will depend on whether Hulk is capable of absorbing quantum energy. Still, Captain Atom can become a living nuclear reactor with infinite potential, and his ability to channel energy into himself could allow him to drain some of the Hulk’s gamma radiation, which may neutralize him or force a reversion to Bruce Banner, just like Silver Surfer did in the comic Incredible Hulk #250.

    Superman

Superman vs Hulk is a popular match-up among fans, sparking endless debates over the years. In terms of physical strength, Superman is the powerhouse of the DC Universe, while Hulk holds that title in Marvel, so both would put up a tremendous fight. However, unless the battle drags on long enough for Hulk to reach his full power, reaching planetary scales and theoretically infinite strength, the fact that Superman is virtually indestructible gives him basically the advantage unless kryptonite is involved.

6 Marvel Heroes Who Fought Hulk And Won

Some of the Marvel heroes who have managed to overcome the Hulk’s immense strength aren’t even that powerful compared to the Green Goliath.

That being said, the Man of Steel has already been shown defeating Hulk. Furthermore, Superman has an almost invincible form within the DC Universe where he isn’t even affected by kryptonite: Superman Prime One Million. In this form, he is functionally immortal and the pinnacle of strength, possessing near-godlike, cosmic powers, so Hulk wouldn’t stand a chance against him.

    Doctor Fate

    Doctor Fate in DC comics.

While he is a more obscure hero, Doctor Fate is DC Comics’ magical powerhouse, operating at a level even higher than Marvel’s Doctor Strange. Doctor Fate has had several incarnations, as his powers stem simply from wearing the Helmet of Fate. Yet this makes him basically immortal as long as he wears the helmet.

As an agent combating the forces of chaos, Doctor Fate possesses a vast array of magical abilities, ranging from creating illusions, telepathy, and telekinesis to the capacity to transcend and manipulate dimensions, as well as imprison or banish threats of a cosmic nature. He’s capable of withstanding the collapse of reality, having even survived the rebuild of the universe in Doctor Fate: The Night of Brahma, which makes him more than capable of fighting The Hulk. Such mystical powers suggest that Doctor Fate could attempt to force Hulk to revert to his Bruce Banner form, similar to Doctor Voodoo.

    Firestorm

    dc hero Firestorm
    dc hero Firestorm

Another hero with a shared identity, Firestorm has unstoppable destructive potential akin to the Hulk’s. Capable of projecting energy blasts, Firestorm can even seem significantly more dangerous than the Hulk, thanks to his abilities involving matter transmutation and molecular manipulation. He can also become intangible, which makes him a strong match-up against the Hulk, even if he doesn’t quite compare in terms of raw physical strength.

Given his ability to control radiation and absorb vast amounts of energy to transmute subatomic particle structures and alter elements, Firestorm proves to be an ideal adversary to counter the Hulk. Even without resorting to shapeshifting, he has the power to evade the Hulk’s attacks while also being able to absorb the latter’s gamma energy, either reverting him to his Bruce Banner form or transforming that energy into something that grants him a combat advantage.

    The Spectre

Jim Corrigan the Spectre DC Featured
Jim Corrigan the Spectre DC Featured

The antihero The Spectre is one of the most powerful beings in the DC Universe. As a spiritual entity, he possesses a divine aspect and a human host on Earth. However, despite being bound to a physical body, as a messenger of a god, he cannot die in the conventional sense. His power is nearly limitless, including the ability to manipulate space, possess telepathic skills, and transmute matter.

While the Hulk’s theoretically endless strength comes from his anger and levels of gamma radiation energy, the Spectre draws his powers directly from God as the literal embodiment of divine wrath. As an entity of cosmic might, the Spectre operates on a virtually conceptual scale due to his ability to alter reality. Therefore, Hulk’s physical strength is irrelevant against him, indicating that Hulk would be vastly outclassed.

    Doctor Manhattan

Originally a human physicist named Jon Osterman, Doctor Manhattan became a limitless being and one of the strongest heroes of human origins. His ability to decompose and reassemble anything at an atomic level is just too overpowered. Every atom in the universe is known to Doctor Manhattan, so all physical phenomena and events are within his grasp. Consequently, he can perceive the past, present, and future simultaneously, possessing omniscient powers, which makes him more of a cosmic entity.

Although he may not be a typical hero, given that his actions and thoughts are more akin to those of an observer god, there’s no doubt that he could defeat the Hulk however he wants since, despite his evolutionary potential, the jade giant still exists within the physical realm. Dismantling him at a subatomic level, stripping the gamma radiation from his being, or employing reality manipulation to damage him in an impossible environment, there are endless options for Doctor Manhattan against the Hulk.
