After all, an original story is always going to have more mystery and intrigue than a superhero sequel, and that made this film feel like such a rare swing when it arrived in 2023.
Three years later, Gareth Edwards’ The Creator — the $104 million sci-fi epic — is finally finding the audience it deserves on Netflix, and its streaming resurgence gives viewers another opportunity to discover one of the most visually impressive original blockbusters of the decade. Set during a war between humanity and artificial intelligence, The Creator follows Joshua (John David Washington), a former special-forces operative assigned to eliminate a mysterious AI weapon. He instead discovers that the weapon is a child named Alphie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles).
The film stars Gemma Chan (Eternals) as Maya Fey, Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai) as Harun, Sturgill Simpson (Killers of the Flower Moon) as Drew, Allison Janney (I, Tonya) as Colonel Howell, Ralph Ineson (The Witch) as General Andrews, and Marc Menchaca (Ozark) as McBride.

Now, at the box office,The Creator was a real disappointment, which is a shame considering the work that went into the movie. It grossed approximately $104.3 million worldwide, including $40.8 million in the United States and Canada, but that wasn’t enough to turn it into a profitable movie. Remarkably, though, the budget wasn’t anywhere near as high as you’d expect from how good the movie looked. The film carried a reported production budget of around $80 million before marketing costs. Edwards and his team kept that figure relatively low by shooting extensively on location before adding futuristic elements during post-production, rather than constructing enormous studio sets in advance.
The critical response was more encouraging than the commercial result. The Creator holds a 67% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, with widespread praise directed towards its cinematography, world-building, and unusually efficient visual-effects production. However, the reviewers in general were less enamored with what they felt was an overly familiar storyline and emotional beats, as well as the sort of broad treatment it gave the topic of artificial intelligence.
