From an explosion of Marvel favorites in Avengers: Doomsday to the hotly anticipated The Mandalorian and Grogu, the 2026 box office lineup is already looking memorable. Among the highlights is perhaps the biggest animated event of the year, and a film that seems destined to threaten the billion-dollar boundary following its release on June 19, 2026. That movie is Toy Story 5, which joins Supergirl, Scary Movie 6, and Travis Knight‘s big-screen adaptation of Masters of the Universe in a stacked June slate.
Ahead of the return to the world’s favorite gang of toys, which was first announced back in 2023, plenty of speculation has surrounded exactly what direction the franchise could go in following the fourth outing. Of course, both Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz (Tim Allen) would be returning, with it confirmed that the likes of Blake Clark as Slinky and Tony Hale as Forky would also return alongside Ernie Hudson as Combat Carl following the passing of Carl Weathers. They will all be joining the debuting Smarty Pants, voiced by the hilarious Conan O’Brien. However, thanks to a recent interview with Allen on Live with Kelly and Mark, it seems that the latest Toy Story installment will actually center on many people’s favorite toy, Jessie (Joan Cusack). Allen said:
“It’s such a great story. I can only tell a little bit of it. It’s a Jessie story, Tom and I have to reunite, and there’s just the funniest thing, because there’s a whole bunch of Buzzes involved. And there’s a reason why there’s a whole bunch of me, so there’s 100 of me in a separate story, and I’m having so much fun.”
2026 is a Huge Year at the Movies
2026 really is shaping up to be one of the most exciting years for cinema of the decade. Among the huge franchise entries, from the aforementioned Supergirl and Doomsday to Dune: Part Three and a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, there is one film above all that looks to be the biggest event, not just of the cinematic year, but one of the biggest of the past ten years. That film is Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, an ambitious retelling of Homer’s epic that the great director seems to be shaping as his lasting masterpiece. Only time will tell whether it lives up to the hype, and you can find out with the rest of the world on July 17, 2026.
Toy Story 5 will debut in theaters on June 19, 2026. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
