The Pogues Fight For A Win In A Messy, Emotionally Satisfying Final Outing

Outer Banks season 5 had a lot to live up to. Not only did it have to provide a conclusive end to years of outlandish, addictive treasure-hunting escapades, it also had to deal with the fallout of beloved Pogue JJ Maybank’s heartbreaking death in the season 4 finale. From the very beginning, Rudy Pankow’s JJ was the glue that held the Pogues (and arguably the show) together, a teenage force of pain, friendship, fearlessness, and most of all, love. JJ really, really loved his friends, and as Outer Banks season 5 proves, his friends really, really loved him, too.

JJ’s legacy is felt throughout Outer Banks’ entire 10-episode final season, especially in Madison Bailey’s Kiara Carrera, whose grief is inescapable and palpable from her very first scene. She alone watched JJ die and has vowed to get revenge on the man responsible: Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane), JJ’s maniacal, biological father.

If anything, Outer Banks season 5 is Kiara’s season. Bailey is in top form; everything she does as Kiara is visceral and raw and will have you fighting tears, taking Pankow’s place as the season’s central emotional anchor. The others have their role to play, of course, and they all make choices that directly affect their futures, but it’s Kiara’s heartbreak that pushes them from Morocco to Spain, to Croatia, and eventually, back to the OBX — in handcuffs.

It’s when they’re back in Kildare that the story gets a little messy and overstuffed, unfortunately. Cleo (Carlacia Grant) is deported to the Bahamas. Pope (J.D.) is sentenced to a month in county jail. Kiara drowns in her sorrow, and John B (Chase Stokes) and Sarah (Madelyn Cline) try to figure out a way to earn honest money and avoid homelessness. They’re already at rock bottom, with no Blue Crown and no prospects; understandably, they’re a little desperate. That doesn’t really excuse what happens next, however.

Outer Banks Season 5 Has A Villain Problem

Once they’re back in the Outer Banks, John B tries. He really does try to make things right. Still, though, he has a baby on the way, and babies cost money. As a result, John B makes an incredibly rash, season 1-era stupid decision, one that ends with him and a pregnant Sarah being hunted down by a pair of C-level drug-running villains, all the way down to New Orleans. It’s a frankly unnecessary subplot that takes up nearly half the season and doesn’t really add anything to the overall story, other than further endangering Pope’s already precarious future and Sarah’s life.

It really does feel like that dreaded filler. This might not have been as much of an issue in the first few seasons, but in this final season, when there are plenty of other things to get on with — another treasure hunt, for example, or exploring the other characters’ relationships in more depth — it’s the wrong move. It’s also strangely out of character for John B, who, at the very beginning of the season, finally seems to realize that all the danger and the quest for gold (in any form) may not be worth it if it means losing the people you love.

The drug smugglers aren’t the only weak villains this season, either. Kook developer Dale Zeasy (Jason Davis) is a greedy, two-dimensional antagonist hell-bent on destroying anything Pogue-adjacent. His motive? More money. Who cares about those filthy Pogues, right? It’s just so… overly simplified, and while it does add a little meat to Pope’s storyline with his dad and gives Topper (Austin North) and Rafe (Drew Starkey) something to do for a few episodes, it just feels empty.

It’s all worth it in the end, if only to see whether the show’s beloved Pogues finally find peace and a real home after years of bad luck and pain.

Then there’s OBX5‘s third, final, and biggest villain: Groff, the show’s replacement for Sarah’s sociopathic dad, Ward. Ward, at least, had a little complexity to him. He did, in the end, seem to have genuine affection for his children. There was a heart in there somewhere, very, very deep down, but that made his interactions with the Pogue gang, Sarah, Rafe, and their youngest sister Wheezie (Julia Antonelli) all the more compelling and unpredictable. The same can be said for mid-show Rafe, who finally owns up to his biggest mistakes this season.

Groff, on the other hand, is so overtly evil and “weaselly,” as Sheriff Shoupe (Cullen Moss) describes him, that he’s actually become uninteresting in the process. At least in the previous season, there was a sense of mystery. Now, you’re just left waiting for him to meet his match, as he becomes increasingly violent, obsessive, and creepy. Thankfully, Groff’s ending is satisfyingly poetic, worth a “hell yeah!” or two, but it does take a very, very long time to get there. Still, though, it’s all worth it in the end, if only to see whether the show’s beloved Pogues finally find peace and a real home after years of bad luck and pain.

Overcoming Grief Is The Central Theme Of Outer Banks Season 5

Whereas previous seasons have largely focused thematically on the relationship between kids and their fathers — John B and Big John, JJ and his two terrible dads, Sarah, Rafe, and Ward, Pope and his Pops — this season is all about grief and learning to move on. This is a natural shift after JJ’s death, of course, but the way the show handles it is (for the most part, at least) genuinely emotionally effective.

As I said, Outer Banks season 5 is Kiara’s season, but she’s not the only one desperate to believe in the Blue Crown’s legendary resurrectionist power. One of their rivals, Finch (Jason Alan Carvell), is just as eager to see someone again as she is. This is a story about the nature of grief and how it can change people for better and for worse. The season’s penultimate episode features a visually stunning, powerful sequence in which Kiara is reminded of how much richer her life was because of her friendship and eventual romance with JJ, allowing her to remember what she had rather than focus solely on what she lost.

8 Biggest Outer Banks Unanswered Questions & Mysteries Season 5 Must Solve Before Ending The Show

Outer Banks season 4 was the biggest season yet, and after a shocking death and some major twists, the show has a lot to cover in its final season.

It’s not a quick fix, and, of course, she still misses him (and she still wants revenge against Groff), but there’s a real lesson here for the audience and the Pogues themselves. In the end, as JJ realized in the final moments before his death, the real treasure is what they have together. Everything else is secondary, and this season highlights that in almost every scene. Sure, they constantly make mistakes, but this friendship is eternal, forged in blood, sweat, tears, and lost gold. The show reveals that that’s what Groff was most envious of, which makes sense. He has nothing, while they have everything.

That doesn’t mean the Pogues have completely lost interest in treasure or rebuilding Poguelandia, of course; all they ever really wanted was a single win, and they’re willing to do whatever it takes to get it. When the credits roll on Outer Banks‘ final episode, it’s easy enough to forget about this season’s pacing and narrative issues. “Pogues for Life” has never been more meaningful.

All episodes of Outer Banks season 5 are streaming now, only on Netflix.
