Sydney Alternative Rock Refuses to Take Itself Too Seriously

SUPERHANDS are an Inner West Sydney band embracing the irreverent spirit of Australia’s underground music scene. While they jokingly reject labels like punk, their music thrives on the raw energy, attitude, and DIY ethos that define the genre, blending punchy alternative rock, garage influences, and hook-driven songwriting with a healthy dose of self-deprecating humour. Built as much around loud live shows as memorable songs, SUPERHANDS prove that authenticity doesn’t always have to come wrapped in seriousness.

Narcissist: Sharp Hooks with a Self-Aware Bite

“Narcissist” channels restless guitar riffs, driving rhythms, and infectious choruses into a track that balances swagger with satire. Rather than glorifying ego, the song pokes fun at self-importance and modern self-obsession, pairing sharp lyricism with a playful, high-energy performance.

The band’s loose, carefree delivery gives the track an effortless charm, while its punchy production and melodic hooks make it instantly memorable. Beneath the humour lies an honest reflection on the contradictions of confidence, image, and identity, giving “Narcissist” more depth than its tongue-in-cheek attitude initially suggests.

It’s loud, catchy, and built to be shouted back from the front row.

Why It Matters: Personality Is Becoming Punk’s Greatest Strength

Many of today’s most exciting alternative bands are moving away from rigid genre definitions, choosing personality, humour, and authenticity over fitting neatly into a scene. SUPERHANDS embody that approach, embracing punk’s rebellious spirit while refusing to take either themselves or the genre too seriously.

“Narcissist” reflects the growing appeal of guitar music that combines memorable songwriting with self-awareness and genuine fun. As Australia’s independent rock scene continues producing bands that blur the lines between punk, indie, and garage rock, SUPERHANDS stand out by proving that sometimes the best way to make a statement is not to pretend you’re trying to make one.
