In less than a week of release at the box office, the new action movie Sisu: Road to Revenge has already broken past the lifetime global hauls of several older movies set during the World War 2 era. Sisu 2 is a sequel to the word-of-mouth hit Sisu, which was released theatrically in 2022, grossing $12 million worldwide. The new movie has grossed around half that amount so far, but is quickly catching up with the recently released drama Nuremberg, and has already overtaken the lifetime global haul of one of the most underrated WW2-era movies of recent times, director Terrence Malick‘s critically acclaimed box office underperformer A Hidden Life. Brimming with Malick’s trademark poetic style, the movie couldn’t be more different from Sisu 2, which features wall-to-wall action.

A Hidden Life was released theatrically in 2019, one of the rare Malick movies to get a proper theatrical release by a mainstream studio; in this case, Fox Searchlight. Unlike most other Malick movies, A Hidden Life also didn’t go through an extended post-production period; it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and released theatrically in December, when it grossed under $5 million worldwide. The movie came at the end of a particularly creative period for the famously elusive Malick; he’d released four films already in the 2010s. A Hidden Life followed the real-life conscientious objector Franz Jägerstätter, played by August Diehl, and his wife, Franziska, played by Valerie Pachner. Both refused to fight for the Nazis during WW2, and paid a great price.

‘A Hidden Life’ Marked the Final Screen Appearances of Two Legends

Tragically, the movie also marked the final screen appearances of Michael Nyqvist and Bruno Ganz. A Hidden Life opened to excellent reviews, and is now sitting at a “certified fresh” 82% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Ambitious and visually absorbing, A Hidden Life may prove inscrutable to non-devotees — but for viewers on Malick’s wavelength, it should only further confirm his genius.” Malick has since been putting together his Biblical epic The Way of the Wind, featuring Géza Röhrig as Jesus and Mark Rylance as Satan. Sisu 2 is directed by Jalmari Helander, and is currently sitting at a near-perfect 96% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. You can watch the film in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
