SANDISK NAS Portfolio Unveiled with 2 Exciting New SSDs

Sandisk today announced its latest solid-state drives (SSDs), the first since it was split off from Western Digital: the SANDISK NAS 600 SATA SSD and SANDISK NAS 800 NVMe SSD. The two are part of the company’s all-new SANDISK NAS portfolio.

While this is exciting news, keep in mind that these drives won’t be cheap, as memory costs are generally elevated due to massive demand from the AI industry.

SANDISK NAS portfolio: SSDs purpose-built for NAS servers

As the names suggest, the SANDISK NAS 600 is a SATA drive, and the SANDISK NAS 800 is an NVMe drive. Both are made specifically for network-attached storage (NAS) servers. As such, they generally offer high endurance, longevity, and high capacities.

Specifically, according to Sandisk, the SANDISK NAS 600 SATA SSD features the endurance of 625 TBW (terabytes written) per Terabyte (so 2,500 TBW for the 4TB model) and up to 2.25-hour MTTF. It’s also “engineered to support continuous, multi-user NAS workloads.”

This drive has sequential (copy) read speeds of up to 560 MB/s and comes in the standard 2.5-inch/7mm design, similar to the old-school laptop hard drive—it can generally be installed and work in place of a 3.5-inch hard drive. It’ll be available in capacities ranging from 500GB to 4TB.

The SANDISK NAS 800 NVMe SSD is a huge notch up. According to Sandisk, this is a PCIe Gen 5×4 drive that features extreme endurance of around 1,800 TBW per Terabyte, almost three times that of the SATA drive. It’s also fast. Featuring Sandisk’s TLC 3D NAND, the drive can deliver up to 2.3M IOPS and up to 14,900 MB/s of sequential read/write speeds.

The SANDISK NAS 600 SATA SSD uses the 2.5-inch standard but can be fitted in the place of a 3.5-inch hard drive.

Designed for a NAS environment, according to Sandisk, the SANDISK NAS 800 can handle temperatures up to 185°F (85°C). Coming in the common M.2 2280 form factor, the NVMe drive is available in capacities ranging from 960GB to 7.68TB.

    Availability and pricing

Sandisk says the new SANDISK NAS 800 NVMe SSD and SANDISK NAS 600 SATA SSD will be available for purchase in September, with prices starting at $309.99 and $179.99, respectively, for the lowest capacities (960GB and 500GB). Expect the top-capacity model to cost several thousand dollars.

Currently, it’s unclear whether the new SSDs will be compatible with all NAS servers, especially whether the NVMe drive is compatible with Synology, which notoriously only allows “approved” (often self-branded) drives to work as storage volumes.
