Sandisk today announced its latest USB-C flash drive, and you’ll miss it if you don’t pay attention. Indeed, the new “thumb” drive, called Sandisk Extreme Fit USB-C Flash Drive, is about as tinny—and cute—as a button.

On this front, Sandisk claims that the new portable drive is “the world’s smallest 1TB USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 drive.”

Sandisk Extreme Fit USB-C Flash Drive: A tiny storage device that could

The Sandisk Extreme Fit USB-C Flash Drive is literally a squarish button with a USB-C connector attached to it. Connect it to a computer’s USB-C port and you’re good to go. It works like any other thumb drives or portable SSDs, providing extra storage to the host machine.

In terms of capacity, Sandisk says the new drive offers up to 1TB of storage space, and as for performance, it features the USB 3.2 Gen 1 (a.k.a. USB 3.0) standard that has a ceiling speed of up to 5Gbps. Of course, its real-world performance is lower than that and is to be determined. However, Sandisk says that the drive can sustain at around 400MB/s, which, if true, is plenty fast for almost any application.

The point is that, despite being tiny, the Sandisk Extreme Fit USB-C Flash Drive is both fast and spacious. As the name suggests, it’s pretty “extreme”.

On the back, the Sandisk Extreme Fit USB-C Flash Drive comes with a colorful logo of its maker. This design helps if you need to find it among other little things.

The table below shows the Sandisk Extreme Fit USB-C Flash Drive’s hardware specs and its available capacities.

A typical SanDisk portable drive with the common SanDisk Memory Zone app

Like all Sandisk portable SSDs, the Sandisk Extreme Fit USB-C Flash Drive features the common SanDisk Memory Zone app that provides useful backup functions. You can use the app to automatically back up content from the host device’s storage to the portable SSD in real-time, which is handy for mobile users.

Alternatively, on a computer, you can use the operating system’s built-in backup app, such as macOS’s Time Machine or Windows’ File History.

In any case, the most noteworthy thing about the new drive is its tiny physical size, which makes you wonder how it’d perform in real-world use, and I intend to find out.

    Availability and pricing

The Sandisk Extreme Fit USB-C Flash Drive is available for purchase today with prices starting at less than $20 a pop. I’m in the process of getting one myself to see the performance pans out. However, considering the design and the costs, I’d say it’s safe to go ahead and get one or two for your on-the-go storage needs, just make sure your machine has a USB-C port.
