Pokémon Fans Found a Way to Bring Rare Event Pokémon to FireRed and LeafGreen

Pokémon fan group MercuryEnigma has found a way to create custom events in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. This makes it possible for anyone to create fan-made items or Pokémon and send them to the Gen 1 remakes. MercuryEnigma has published a video showcasing this experiment, and fans are eager to know more so they can replicate the process at home.

Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen made their way to the Switch and the Switch 2 back in February. Veteran gamers went on a trip down memory lane, as they once again embarked on a journey through the Kanto region. Others had the pleasure of experiencing this classic for the very first time. As players began the process of catching ’em all and completing the Pokédex, they realized that their Pokémon would be stuck in those games. Thankfully, this is about to change, as the ports are getting Pokémon Home support in October, making it possible for players to bring them to other games. As a reward for completing the Kanto Dex in FRLG, players will receive a Celebi in Pokémon Home.

Unfortunately, once a Pokémon has been transferred from FireRed or LeafGreen, it cannot return to its original home. Thankfully, Pokémon Home is able to read a game’s Pokédex without transferring any Pokémon, allowing players to get the Celebi without permanently moving all 150 Pokémon available in the FRLG ports to Home. Some players were hoping that Pokémon Home would work both ways, and that they would be able to get Celebi in FireRed and LeafGreen, despite it not being in the original games. In an attempt to solve this issue, a team of Pokémon fans figured out a way to program fan-made events into the game over local wireless; thus, making it possible for players to get Celebi or any other Pokémon into FireRed and LeafGreen.

According to MercuryEnigma, this is done through the Mystery Gift feature. Since it works over local wireless, the group was able to use a WiFi chip on a computer to connect it to unmodded Switch and Switch 2 consoles, emulating a connection with another console. This allowed them to receive items or Pokémon from the emulator via Mystery Gift.

This is still a work in progress, but it has already proven successful, as MercuryEnigma managed to obtain a Level 50 event Celebi at the end of the video. Hopefully, the group will continue to share information on the project and, eventually, a guide explaining how players can do this by themselves. Many fans will certainly want to create a custom event that grants Mew, so they’re able to truly complete the Gen 1 Pokédex at last.
