One Family Rallied Their Porsche 911 Dakar 2,200 Miles Across Brazil

    • The Piotto Vogts have completed the Rally dos Sertões multiple times.
    • This event covers nearly 2,200 miles of Brazilian wilderness.
    • The 911 Dakar was the first Porsche to ever participate in this treacherous event.

When Porsche first announced the 911 Dakar, most assumed the car would end up in the hands of those unlikely to ever get their expensive rides dirty. Even though the car is literally named after a legendary off-road rally.

Not every 911 Dakar buyer is content to flex at their local Cars and Coffee, however. The Piotto Vogt family from Brazil, for example, just used their 911 Dakar to complete the incredibly difficult Rally dos Sertões. This marks the first time any Porsche has ever participated in the lengthy off-road adventure.

The rally was first launched in 1993. It’s considered one of the toughest events in South America, typically tackled on motorcycles, side-by-sides, and quads. Susele and her husband, Fredy, have competed in past events using a side-by-side. This time, they figured the 911 Dakar would be the perfect vehicle for the race.

To complete the rally, the Piotto Vogts (along with their son João Pedro) covered nearly 2,100 miles from start to finish. That’s just the rally course; however, the total trip included a long drive to and from the race. All told, the family put more than 4,600 miles on the odometer of the Dakar over the course of two weeks.

A support SUV was also in tow, but the rally was otherwise run in this ready-to-rumble 911. The family slept in the rooftop tent, traversed water crossings, and really put the car to the test.

Motor1’s Take: Seeing a purpose-built vehicle used as intended is always fun to watch. But when that vehicle is a rally-ready 911, it’s all the better. All too often, cars like this end up in sealed-off garages where nary a tire is turned in anger.

The Piotto Vogt family understands why a car like the 911 Dakar exists, and we raise a glass to them for putting it through this incredible challenge.
