Matt Damon’s 41% RT ‘Oceans’ Replacement Is Quietly Surging on Streaming

Matt Damon’s role as Linus in the Ocean’s franchise is one of the most famous of his career, but just last year, he starred in a replacement to the film that’s still surging on streaming charts. Damon stars alongside Casey Affleck in The Instigators, the Apple TV original heist film following a pair of robbers who must go on the run with the help of their therapist after one of their jobs doesn’t go as planned. The Instigators began streaming on Apple TV last August, and although it’s been almost a year and a half since its premiere, the film is still in the global top 10 in more than 15 countries around the world.

Like many straight-to-streaming films, especially from Apple TV, The Instigators did get released in a few theaters around the world before its global streaming premiere. However, it returned less than $50,000 at the box office during limited showings, and further box office information for the film has not been made available or reported. The Instigators, which drew comparisons to Ocean’s Eleven upon release, largely due to the heist premise, also wasn’t a critical darling by any means. The film currently sits at scores of 41% from critics and 55% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

In addition to starring in the film, Casey Affleck also wrote the script for The Instigators with Chuck MacLean, and Doug Liman stepped behind the camera to direct the film. Affleck has also earned writing credits on other projects such as Gerry, Light of My Life, and I’m Still Here. The Instigators director Doug Liman is best known for his work directing the Tom Cruise-led sci-fi blockbuster, Edge of Tomorrow, and he also recently directed Road House starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

Matt Damon Is Leading One of the Biggest Movies of 2026

After starring in Oppenheimer a few years ago, Matt Damon will reunite with director Christopher Nolan for one of the biggest blockbusters of 2026. Damon will star as Odysseus in Nolan’s take on The Odyssey, which will be released in theaters on July 17, 2026. Tom Holland and Anne Hathaway will also star in the film, along with one of the biggest casts of stars ever assembled. Damon will also reunite with his long-time collaborator Ben Affleck in The Rip, a new Miami-set crime thriller coming to Netflix early next year.

Be sure to check out The Instigators on Apple TV and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
