Lord Of The Rings Officially Returns August 2026 With Fan Favorite Characters

The Lord of the Rings is back and more relevant than ever before, thanks to a string of great and not-so-great releases that have ensured its legacy remains firmly planted in the zeitgeist for years to come. That’s great for hardcore fans and those just getting into the legendary fantasy universe, as it means more and more projects are going to continue rolling out until we all inevitably get LOTR fatigue and move on to whatever Game of Thrones projects start appearing.

As we all await the extremely hyped upcoming Lord of the Rings open-world game, which is likely still years away, there are several projects fans of LOTR and gaming of all kinds will want to pay attention to specifically. An upcoming Lord of the Rings project, set to release in August 2026, is bringing a swathe of fan-favorite characters back for one last adventure in a format that worked extremely well for the franchise last time.

The world of Middle-earth is once again returning to Magic: The Gathering, only this time, instead of focusing on the events and characters of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, it is turning its attention to the equally brilliant and endlessly enjoyable The Hobbit. The previous Lord of the Rings MTG set was extremely successful both commercially and critically, with fans largely accepting it despite the rising aversion to Universes Beyond sets. So, it makes perfect sense that Wizards of the Coast would want to return to Middle-earth a second time.

Like before, The Hobbit Magic: The Gathering set will feature iconic characters, moments, and equipment from the book, albeit adapted into the TCG’s unique style. Several Hobbit Magic: The Gathering cards have already been revealed, including versions of Bilbo, Smaug, Thorin, Sauron, Tom Bombadil, and even the three trolls, Tom, Bert, and William. Moments like the Unexpected Party and Riddles in the Dark have also been adapted into card form, and so many more are sure to follow.

Despite being considered a small set and lacking any products beyond traditional Play Boosters, Prerelease packs, and Bundles, The Hobbit MTG set will feature 248 unique cards. Fans can rest assured that all of their fan-favorite characters from the book will be featured, and, likely, various characters from the general Middle-earth mythos will also make an appearance. Those unaccustomed to Magic: The Gathering who may be interested in this particular set can absolutely jump in, with prerelease events designed for such players.

At the very least, cracking a few Play Boosters and seeing what fun characters you pull, or indeed if you manage to pull any of the rare special treatments, such as cards featuring the Smaug border, will be fun. It is great to see Lord of the Rings return to Magic: The Gathering, especially as Wizards of the Coast seems to be best equipped to adapt the legendary fantasy epic, and hopefully it will once again entice a new cohort of players who can jump from this Universes Beyond set into MTG’s very own rich lore and universes.
