With the new year fast approaching, several lists of what’s coming and departing streamers both in the US and internationally have been making the rounds. Most recently, Netflix unveiled its list of departing titles, which features one of the most beloved Stephen King adaptations that fans will sadly no longer have access to on the streamer from New Year’s Day. This fan-favorite joins many major titles, including cult classics, blockbuster franchises, and award-winning productions, that will also be leaving Netflix throughout January 2026.

Titled The Green Mile, the last day to watch the critics-approved adaptation is December 31, 2025, just a few days before Christmas, and starting January 1, 2026, it won’t be available on Netflix. The film holds a Certified Fresh 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 134 reviews, with critics’ consensus calling it “an absorbing, emotionally powerful experience.” In comparison, its audience score is even more impressive—94%, with most viewers rating it as highly rewatchable despite its 189-minute runtime.

The Green Mile debuted in the US on December 10, 1999, and was a commercial success, grossing $286.8 million from its $60 million budget. It was also the second most financially successful in Japan for the year, with a gross of $55.3 million. On top of that, the fantasy adaptation was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for the late Michael Clarke Duncan, Best Sound, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

‘The Green Mile’ Is One of the Most Intriguing Stephen King Fantasy Adaptations

Written and directed by The Shawshank Redemption’s Frank Darabont (who made his grand return to directing very recently with Stranger Things Season 5), The Green Mile sees Tom Hanks portray Paul Edgecomb, a death row prison guard, during the Great Depression. Paul witnesses supernatural events following the arrival of an enigmatic convict, John Coffey (Duncan), at his facility. He had never encountered someone like Coffey, a massive man convicted of brutally killing a pair of young sisters, but while Coffey had the size and strength to kill anyone, he did not have the demeanor. Beyond his simple, naive nature and a deathly fear of the dark, Coffey seemed to possess a prodigious, supernatural gift, and then Paul began to question whether Coffey was truly guilty of murdering the two girls.

Watch The Green Mile on Netflix before its departure in a few days. Stay tuned to Collider for more information.
