AI technology is leapfrogging, yet that doesn’t mean we always want a revolutionary feature out of it. What most users would want more of are simple capabilities within AI that can help with their everyday tasks, whether in the office, at home, or anywhere else. On those lines, OpenAI may have just come up with one of the most promising updates for its GPT-5.5 in ChatGPT:

GPT-5.5 can now make and work inside Excel sheets.

Exciting, right? But what exactly does that mean? How does it work? And most importantly, how can it help you?

Let us answer all of these one by one.

What is the new GPT-5.5 Update?

If you have ever used ChatGPT or any other AI model for making or maintaining Excel sheets, you would know the exact pain point that is the biggest deterrent to increased efficiency. You constantly have to shuffle data, or at times, the sheet itself, between the chatbot and Excel to use AI effectively within it. Well, no more!

How? In a new accessibility update, OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT will now work inside both Excel and Google Sheets. Which means you can now use AI on all Excel and Google Sheets, without ever having to navigate outside the respective platforms.

    Here is how it works:

GPT-5.5 in Excel + Google Sheets

The idea is simple. Think of the new ChatGPT feature as a mini version that fits within Excel. You can call it a plugin.

With that, all you have to do is fire up your preferred platform of the two and add the new ChatGPT plugin to it one time. Once done, you will have your favourite AI chatbot right at your fingertips even when you are working on Excel or Google Sheets.

Here is how to install it for both:

    ChatGPT on Excel

To get ChatGPT on your Excel:

    • First, go to Home → Add-ins
    • Search for ChatGPT by OpenAI, click Add
    • Go through the installation setup and sign-ins
    • Once done, go to Extensions → ChatGPT → Open Sidebar
    • Log in to your OpenAI account and start working with it

    ChatGPT on Google Sheets

    • First, install ChatGPT for Google Sheets from Home → Extensions → Add-ons → Get Add-ons
    • Sign in to your Google Account to complete the installation
    • Once installed, go to Extensions → ChatGPT → Open Sidebar
    • Log in to your OpenAI account to connect and start working with it

Note that ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets is available globally. OpenAI says it is available for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, Teachers, K-12, Free, Go, Pro, and Plus users.

Now that you know exactly how to install it, let us explore the plethora of possibilities that this new form of AI chatbot brings with it.

ChatGPT on Excel/ Google Sheets: Use-Cases

Here are the various ways in which ChatGPT in Excel and Google Sheets can add immense value to your daily workflow.

    1. Generate a Sample Dataset for Sales Tracking

You can ask ChatGPT to create a simple sales dataset with columns like product name, month, units sold, price, and total revenue.

    Sample Prompt:

“Create a sample sales dataset for 5 products across 3 months.”

    2. Build a Full Spreadsheet Around the Dataset

Once the data is ready, ChatGPT can organise it into a proper spreadsheet with a raw data tab and a simple summary tab.

    Sample Prompt:

“Turn this sales dataset into a spreadsheet with one raw data tab and one summary tab.”

    3. Add Formulas to Calculate Totals

ChatGPT can add basic formulas to calculate total revenue, monthly sales, and product-wise sales.

    Sample Prompt:

“Add formulas to calculate total revenue for each product and total sales for each month.”

    4. Edit and Fix Existing Formulas

If a formula is wrong, ChatGPT can identify the issue and correct it.

    Sample Prompt:

“Check the revenue formula in this sheet and fix it if it is wrong.”

    5. Get Insights Across Tabs

ChatGPT can read the data and summary tabs together to explain what the numbers show.

    Sample Prompt:

“Look at both tabs and tell me which product sold the most and which month had the highest revenue.”

    6. Update the Sheet in Real Time

When new sales data is added, ChatGPT can update the formulas and summary.

    Sample Prompt:

“Add April sales data to this sheet and update the totals and summary.”

ChatGPT in Excel/ Sheets: Key Points

Here are some key points to remember before you begin using ChatGPT within Excel and Google Sheets.

    Data Handling

OpenAI says data shared with ChatGPT is not used to improve models by default for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers users. This is important for teams working with sensitive spreadsheets, business reports, financial models, or internal trackers.

    Separate from ChatGPT Chat History

The Excel and Google Sheets add-in works separately from regular ChatGPT chats. OpenAI says conversations and data inside Excel are not shared with ChatGPT chat history, and activity does not sync between both experiences right now.

    Admin Controls for Enterprise

For ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces, this feature is disabled by default. Admins can enable it and control access using role-based access controls from workspace settings.

    Current Limitations

Some advanced spreadsheet features are not supported yet. These include Office Scripts, Power Query, Pivot/Data Model, data validation, slicers, timelines, external connection administration, advanced charting, and VBA automation. Very large workbooks may also return partial results because of context limits.

    Use With Caution

OpenAI clearly says ChatGPT is not a financial or accounting advisor. Since it can edit workbooks, unclear prompts may accidentally change or delete data. So users should be specific about what they want changed and double-check the updates.

    File Upload Support

Users can upload images, PDFs, Word files, PowerPoint files, Excel sheets, CSV/TSV/IIF files, JSON, HTML, Markdown, and other text/code formats. The current limits mentioned are up to 20 attachments per message and 25 MB per file.

    App Connections

ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets can also connect to apps available in the user’s OpenAI account. Access depends on the user’s plan, workspace admin settings, app availability, permissions, and data-source access.

    Conclusion

There is absolutely no doubt that this is a fantastic leap for ChatGPT in just the direction that many of its users long wanted. Such practical uses of AI that plug into everyday workflows are among the strongest aspects driving its global adoption. I used it on a spreadsheet for 10 minutes, and I can already see it accelerating my work pace by simply avoiding the constant to and fro from the earlier app/ web interface to the Google Sheets plugin. And for those who didn’t even use AI for their spreadsheets as yet, believe me, this is sure to be a game-changer!

Having said that, you should know that such AI tools are already available across both platforms, as Excel now comes with CoPilot, while Google Sheets houses Gemini. You can find both among the menu section, usually at the top right of the window.

So go ahead and give it a try. If not GPT-5.5, then the other ones, and you will see AI work its magic within your daily tasks.
