In the final months in the run-up to the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar Games has found itself in hot water once again following an investigation by His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), the tax department of the UK government. Spotted by the Daily Mirror, the report reveals that Rockstar was one of 389 companies who owed a substantial amount of money to its employees, and as a result, are facing harsh penalties. Could this mean another delay is inevitable for Grand Theft Auto VI?
GTA 6 Developer Rockstar Is Facing More Trouble
Set to launch on 19 November 2026, Grand Theft Auto VI has cemented itself as the most anticipated video game release of all time. With it having been over a decade since the last entry, Grand Theft Auto V, was released, it is safe to say that fans are eager to get stuck into Rockstar’s latest project. However, with yet another scandal under its belt, it remains to be seen how this will affect GTA VI‘s future.
In a report by the Daily Mirror, Rockstar Games was 235th in the list of 389 companies who owe money to their employees. More specifically, Rockstar Games UK Limited in Edinburgh reportedly failed to pay £1,396.73 to five workers. Although this would be a minor amount of money for the company, it is still disappointing to see that it is treating its workforce unfairly, especially during such a busy time in game development. With HMRC demanding Rockstar pay the outstanding fees, this comes as a further blow after the company was recently accused of “Grand Theft Tax” after taking taxpayers’ money, earning millions, and not releasing a new game.
This Probably Won’t Lead To GTA 6’s Third Delay, Though
Although this would be a big deal to the employees affected, it will not be a big deal for Rockstar itself, who will no doubt press on with the development of Grand Theft Auto VI. However, fans over on r/GTA6 were still prepared to share their thoughts on the recent scandal, and what this could mean for the future of the beloved franchise. Overall, it seems as though a potential third delay will come as no surprise.
“Yeah, the peak of my hype was last February,” one user shared. “Legitimately, I do not care at all at this point, because my mindset at the moment is that it’s probably not even going to come out this year. Once we start getting more consistent trailers and marketing, maybe my hype will start building again, but as of now, GTA 6 is the last thing that’s on my mind.” Another agreed, adding, “Only reason I still care is because it pops up on my Reddit feed. I’d probably completely forget about the game if I banned this subreddit.”
With scandals and delays, it seems as though Rockstar has a lot to prove to its dedicated fanbase, so let us hope that the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI remains on track.
