Why it is trending: VILLANELLE’s “Placebo” is gaining major traction after being named Radio X’s Record of the Week, with listeners drawn to its gritty ‘90s-inspired sound, hypnotic vocals, and the growing spotlight on frontman Gene Gallagher.

Villanelle are carving out their own lane in the UK rock resurgence, blending grunge textures with hazy, melodic introspection. Fronted by Gene Gallagher — son of Liam Gallagher of Oasis — the band are quickly proving they’re more than just lineage, earning tastemaker support and a loyal underground following. With their forthcoming Measly Means EP set to expand their sonic identity, VILLANELLE are positioning themselves at the forefront of a new wave of nostalgic yet forward-thinking British guitar music.

“Placebo” showcases the band’s grunge-inspired backbone, pairing gritty, distorted instrumentation with dreamy, almost detached vocals that create a compelling tension. Described by Gene as being about “heightened visualizations of post session anxiety,” the track channels restless emotion into a sound that feels both raw and cinematic. Addictive and atmospheric, “Placebo” captures the uneasy comedown after chaos — and signals that VILLANELLE are ready to step into the spotlight on their own terms.
