GMC Hummer Concept: Bronco And Wrangler Rival

    • GMC has unveiled the Hummer X, a truck and SUV that the automaker has no intention of producing.
    • The Hummer X is a testbed for new ideas, technologies, and materials.
    • The concepts feature removable fenders, visible bolts, underbody protection, headlock wheels, and more.

GMC has unveiled a pair of Hummer concepts that feature new technologies, materials, and ideas. The automaker made a truck and an SUV variant designed around the ideas of sustainability and reconfigurability, which go beyond using recycled materials and offering a handful of aftermarket parts.

The Hummer X features “mono-materials.” They replace adhesives with snap fits and mechanical fasteners so parts can be fully recycled, with parts designed for “easy disassembly so customers can swap, share, and recirculate parts.” GMC envisions the Hummer X as part of a circular economy and community.

GMC also used a process called Flex Fab, which is 3D printing with metal. It allows one machine to produce multiple designs for quick on-demand production of parts in small quantities. This technique allowed GMC to give the Hummer X a flat-top design with rounded edges, laser-welded seams, and visible bolts, with the process accounting for 57 percent of both vehicles.

The Hummer X is also quite capable. The truck and SUV feature Multimatic shocks, underbody protection, removable fenders, and beadlock wheels, which are wrapped in Goodyear rubber. The SUV has 37-inch tires while the truck has 35-inch ones.

    Hummer X Vs Hummer EV

The Hummer X SUV measures 188.3 inches long, 80 inches wide, and 72.9 inches tall, with a 116-inch wheelbase. That’s much smaller than the Hummer EV SUV, which is 206.7 inches long, 86.46 inches wide, and 77.8 inches tall. Despite its smaller size, the X has more ground clearance—13.2 inches versus 10.2 inches.

The trucks are a bit closer in size. The Hummer X truck is 207.3 inches long compared to the 216.8-inch-long Hummer EV. The truck also has a wheelbase that is less than six inches shorter than the production model, and it is not as tall, measuring 73.0 inches versus 79.1. The truck, like the SUV, has a higher ground clearance of 12.5 inches.

Inside, the Hummer X features a radical shift in design, with “stackable displays” that let the driver create a cabin that best suits their needs. The image GMC shared showed the entire dashboard lined with seven screens.

General Motors unveiled the two concept vehicles to celebrate the opening of a new design studio in Pasadena, California. The Hummer X was developed in collaboration among GM Advanced Engineering, Advanced Manufacturing, and its new studio.

The automaker already said it has no plans to put the Hummer X into production.

Motor1’s Take: The GMC Hummer EV is due for an update, and while the automaker has zero plans to build the Hummer X, we imagine some of the features here might eventually end up on a refreshed variant or other models.
