Disney+ has been the home to some of the biggest recurring streaming shows over the last seven years, but the longest-running series on the platform is a surprise. From the moment Disney launched its streaming service, it has been constantly filled with shows tied to some of the company’s most recognizable franchises.
For many, serialized storytelling in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or Star Wars are considered the biggest and best shows that Disney+ has to offer. The latter is responsible for The Mandalorian and a few expansion series, as well as acclaimed titles like Andor. The former has brought limited series like WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, while Loki and Daredevil: Born Again are examples of multi-season offerings.
Marvel and Star Wars have undeniably been the main IPs that Disney+ has relied on to make shows, whether they last for a single season or multiple. None of these shows has gone beyond three seasons, though. The Mandalorian is among the group that has reached that number, and most may just assume that the flagship series is Disney+’s longest-running show as a result.
However, that title actually belongs to High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. The first episode premiered on Disney+ the day the service launched, and it concluded its run in 2023 after four seasons. That makes High School Musical: The Musical: The Series the longest-running Disney+ show, as no other exclusive series has had more than three seasons.
How High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Became Disney+’s Longest-Running Series
The record length of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series may come as a surprise to most for several reasons, but the accomplishment is due to a variety of factors. For starters, the series was among the first batch of Disney+ original shows, making it one of the biggest new viewing options for subscribers out the gate. And with the High School Musical attachment, there was a familiarity that viewers could connect to.
Connecting to High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is exactly what viewers did. The mockumentary style of the show, the songs, and breakout performances from Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett helped contribute to the show becoming very popular. The connections to the original movie trilogy, like appearances from Corbin Bleu, Lucas Grabeel, Kaycee Stroh, and Monique Coleman, also ensured longtime High School Musical fans would appreciate the series.
All the love and support that came The Series‘ way gave Disney+ no reason to stop renewing it. In fact, they were not responsible for the show ending after only four seasons. Series creator Tim Federle decided to make the fourth season the end and ensure he could wrap up the story he wanted to, rather than it being left unresolved should a cancellation have come.
Even though the finale aired in 2023, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series has kept its title as Disney+’s longest-running show for three years. The show’s ability to make and release a new season annually is a key reason why. Rather than viewers having to wait years for new episodes, it became a rare streaming series that viewers could reliably count on to come out more quickly.
Will Any Current Disney+ Shows Beat High School Musical’s Record Length?
What’s arguably even more impressive is that High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is in no real danger of fully losing this crown. There is only one other Disney+ show that is confirmed to be getting a fourth season, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, which is expected to arrive at some point this year. The animated series will tie the record but not fully beat it.
If High School Musical is going to completely lose its record, it won’t be for a few years. Daredevil: Born Again, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, X-Men ’97, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and Star Wars: Visions are all confirmed to last three seasons, but none have been officially renewed for fourth seasons. Even if they do get those renewals, it would take a fifth-season announcement to snag the title.
The most likely of these projects to make it to five seasons is Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The series is tackling one book per season, and Rick Riordan wrote five of them. Assuming Disney plans to let this story conclude in its natural spot and at the current pace, then Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 5 could be the one to dethrone High School Musical: The Musical: The Series as the longest-running Disney+ show.
