Destiny 2’s End Reportedly Portends ‘Significant’ Layoffs At Bungie

Destiny 2 is ending with one final live-service update on June 9, and while Bungie tried to spin this as a positive in its announcement, one that marked “a new beginning for Bungie” that would allow it to “begin work incubating our next games,” Bloomberg reports that this spells trouble for the studio.

According to the outlet’s sources, parent company Sony is planning on implementing a “significant number of layoffs” as it winds down development on Destiny 2. The report says Bungie doesn’t have a new project lined up for the team, and that there are no immediate plans to start work on a third game in the shooter MMO series. Sources tell Bloomberg that the staff has been looking to pitch new projects, including potentially new Destiny games, but nothing has been greenlit at this time.

Bloomberg doesn’t state the specific number of layoffs, or if any of the Destiny 2 team might be reallocated to help support Marathon, Bungie’s extraction shooter that launched earlier this year. The company recently announced the game’s new roadmap, which includes experimenting with new PvE elements

Destiny 2‘s final update is called Monument of Triumph, and will act as a send-off for the game’s characters as Bungie seeks to ensure the series lives “beyond Destiny 2.” Whatever that means. In the meantime, Destiny 2 will remain playable for the foreseeable future. Even so, fans are still mourning a game they’ve been playing for nearly a decade.
