Nearly three years have passed since Audi’s former design chief hinted at a possible Mercedes-Benz G-Class rival. While the rugged off-road icon continues to enjoy strong sales, Audi has yet to introduce a competing model. That might change soon. While little has transpired since 2023, Audi boss Gernot Döllner recently told Autocar not to “give up on that dream” of a rugged off-road SUV from the brand. Although Döllner has discussed simplifying the Audi lineup, this doesn’t mean it will eliminate niche models. It was wet, cold and far too early, and it almost made me famous for all the wrong reasons. Eastern Creek Raceway – now known as Sydney Motorsport Park – was beckoning.A dark, brooding racetrack covered in a thin film of water as misty rain constantly leaked from the grey skies above. I’m sitting on a hard race seat, clutching a thin-rimmed black steering wheel with fog filling the visor of a race helmet borrowed from my editor, Andrew Maclean – whose name you’ll also see at CarExpert these days. The car I’m sitting in is truly irreplaceable. A true icon, it’s the…

Of course, while this ancient Japanese proverb uses man in the context of humanity; everyone can live by this philosophy. On my most recent trip south to the Kansai region of Japan, I planned to go and check out the local Civic scene in Nara, specifically a tuning shop…

We’ve all got ‘em – videos that sparked our love for cars or channelled our interests in a particular direction. I could name a few, but one that stands out is a 21-second clip of a bright yellow MkIV Toyota Supra built by JUN, power-sliding at Tsukuba Circuit. Thankfully, you don’t have to. So imagine my joy, when a few years later, I caught a glimpse…
