ABC Officially Spoils Wagner’s High Potential Season 3 Fate After Fatal Cliffhanger

Warning! Spoilers ahead for High Potential season 2, episode 18, “Family Tree.”While Nick Wagner’s life hangs in the balance, ABC has officially confirmed his future in High Potential season 3. Kaitlin Olson’s American adaptation of the French series, HPI, recently wrapped up its 2025-2026 TV cycle with the wildest last 10 minutes of an episode. Admittedly, the case, which involved the murder of a local Los Angeles personality, was less special than the previous year’s Game Master’s twisty mystery, but whatever it lacked, ABC made up for the personal implications of its events.

“Family Tree” featured several major revelations, including new developments about Roman’s disappearance case and Karadec’s romantic status after Lucia was implicated in the case. That said, the biggest twist of the hour happened in its final few minutes, as Morgan found Wagner stabbed to death. The High Potential season 1 finale proved that the writers of the procedural know how to do a good cliffhanger, which they repeated during the show’s sophomore year. Unfortunately, a new announcement from ABC effectively spoils what lies ahead for Wagner.

The High Potential season 2 finale ended with Morgan desperately crying for help as she clutched Wagner’s lifeless body. While it was difficult to say how long he had been sitting there, injured in the park, the ambulances came in pretty quickly, keeping hopes that he would survive the ordeal. That said, even if he survives his injuries, Wagner’s time as the Captain of the LAPD Major Crimes precinct is confirmed to end in High Potential season 3.

Not long after “Family Tree” wrapped up, news broke out that Steve Howey is officially leaving High Potential as a series regular. Per reports, the writers haven’t decided yet on whether Wagner will live or die after his deadly stabbing. That said, regardless of what will happen to him, the fact of the matter is that he will no longer be a main player in the ABC procedural when the top-rated series returns this fall for its junior year.

ABC’s top-rated show continued Morgan Gillory’s story in High Potential season 2, with the procedural setting up a possibly more intriguing season 3.

If Wagner lives, the door will remain open for Howey to return and reprise the character. It’s no secret that his introduction was met with a divisive response from avid viewers. That said, the last few episodes of High Potential were able to fully redeem the character, efficiently making him a fan-favorite. This is the reason why his impeding departure is extra difficult.

What Wagner Leaving Means For Morgan & High Potential’s Future

High Potential‘s endgame couple is still expected to be Morgan and Karadec. It’s a classic case of slow-burn romance on network TV, not to mention HPI functioning as its blueprint. That said, one would be hard-pressed to find anyone who didn’t enjoy Morgan’s dynamic wth Wagner in High Potential season 2.

The way the series was able to develop was so efficient, that there were hopes that they would get together, even though temporarily. If Wagner ends up dying, Morgan will definitely feel some kind of guilt over his untimely demise. If he survives and then leaves Major Crimes, his departure will leave a major hole in the team, especially with how helpful he had been in moving Roman’s case forward.

In the bigger scheme of things, Wagner leaving leads to his current role being vacated, paving the way for Soto to claim the post. It’s a major win for the character, after she was passed on for the promotion that everyone felt was rightfully hers. Wagner’s departure in High Potential season 3 also leaves the team without a champion with the higher-ups, considering his father’s growing vendetta against Morgan and her team, by extension.
