Laurence Fishburne as Regis In The Witcher Season 4: Character Origins Explained

Laurence Fishburne’s Regis has officially been introduced in The Witcher season 4. This installment has been a massive shift for the Netflix series, beginning with Henry Cavill’s departure and the recasting of Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia. Then, there are the transitions within the story itself. Many of the central characters have gone their separate ways, temporarily, and a host of new faces have been added to the mix.

Among the new characters in The Witcher season 4 is Regis, a mysterious medicine man whom Geralt and his companions come across on their journey to find Ciri. This character was first introduced in Andrzej Sapkowski’s book Baptism of Fire. Regis has also played a role within the The Witcher video game franchise. Now, he has officially been featured in Netflix’s live-action series, though there are some differences from one version of the vampire Regis to the next.

Laurence Fishburne Plays Regis In The Witcher Season 4

Geralt and Regis in The Witcher

The Witcher season 4 brings in Laurence Fishburne as the mysterious Regis. While Fishburne hasn’t done a ton of fantasy, much of his filmography includes films in fantasy’s cousin genre, sci-fi. Most notably, he played Morephus in The Matrix films. There’s also Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, where he played Perry White. Fishburne also appeared in Netflix’s The School for Good and Evil.

Fishburne brings a certain elegance to his portrayal of Regis in The Witcher season 4. The actor notably plays world-wise figures, but there is a bit more nuance to Regis. He’s deeply likable and a bit comical, but it’s also clear that Regis could be dangerous if he wanted to be. Fishburne manages this expertly in The Witcher, emphasizing what makes the character unique while maintaining endearing chemistry with Geralt and his company.

Who Is Regis In The Witcher Books?

    The Witcher Books

Just as in The Witcher season 4, Regis’ full name in the books is Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy (but he prefers Regis). Regis first appeared in Baptism of Fire, the third book in Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher series. Geralt meets Regis during his search for Ciri, and Regis decides to join the witcher and his companions. At first, Regis appears to be a simple healer, but eventually, it’s revealed that he’s a vampire, albeit one who has given up drinking blood. Although Geralt is hesitant to trust Regis at first, the two become good friends. In time, Regis’ help proves essential in the fight against the sorcerer, Vilgefortz.

Geralt’s relationship with Regis is a complicated one. Regis’ vampiric nature categorizes him as a monster, and it’s Geralt’s duty as a witcher to neutralize such a threat. However, Regis proves that not only is he an asset, but also a loyal friend. He offers Geralt sage advice when needed, and his abilities as a vampire make him a powerful ally against their enemies. Through Regis, Geralt learns that not all “monsters” are truly what they appear to be.

Who Is Regis In The Witcher Video Games?

Regis is also an important character in the Blood and Wine video game expansion of The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. In the story, Geralt travels to Toussaint in search of a monster, which turns out to be a vampire serial killer named Dettlaff van der Eretein. Geralt then runs into his old friend, Regis, who is protecting Dettlaff after the other vampire saved his life. Regis goes on to aid Geralt in his search for the motive behind the savage murders and plays a big part in the choices that the player must make in deciding Dettlaff’s fate.

Regis’ role in Blood and Wine is not only a fun callback for fans of the books but also goes deeper in the video game. He offers Geralt a conduit into the dark world of vampires and adds complexity to the overall plot. Without Regis, Geralt only knows Dettlaff as a killer who needs to be destroyed, rather than the victim of tragic circumstances. Not only does Regis help Geralt navigate his quest, but he also offers him companionship and perspective.

Regis’ Backstory In The Witcher Season 4 Explained

Regis’ backstory in The Witcher season 4 is similar to that established in the book series, but with some differences. In episode 5, “The Joy of Cooking,” Regis confirms that vampires are typically ostracized if they don’t partake in the consumption of human blood. So, in his younger years, he let his desires overtake him. The euphoric drunkness brought on by Regis’ diet caused him to crash into a well, just as in the canon tale. However, in this version of the story, this accident led to his finding love.

Regis was rescued from the well by the human woman Bethane, and the two began a love afair. Regis stopped drinking blood, and, during this time together, he learned all about plants and natural medicines. Unfortunately, the other vampires saw this romance as Regis playing with his food and decided to put a stop to it. They captured Bethane, and, despite his efforts, Regis was too late to save her life.

Regis took off in a rage, murdering all the vampires who had taken away his love. The villagers, who had come to know of Regis through his relationship with Bathane, arrived to find him at the center of the gory onslaught. They killed the remaining vampires, decapitated Regis, and buried him in the ground. Of course, he slowly healed, but the traumatic experience and loss led Regis to forevermore abstain from blood.

Will Laurence Fishburne Return As Regis In The Witcher Season 5?

Fishburne is already confirmed to appear in The Witcher season 5. In the books, Regis continues to travel with Geralt, helping him all the way through to the final confrontation with villains like Vilgefortz, Emhyr, and Leo Bonhart. We can surely expect the same in the upcoming final installment.

In an interview with Collider earlier in 2025, Fishburne confirmed that he was beginning filming for The Witcher season 5. “Folks are going to have to just be patient with us,” the actor said, “we’re starting season 5 now. I will start when I leave here today.” This is certainly encouraging, since it suggests that we won’t have to wait too long before the final episodes of The Witcher arrive on Netflix. Even better, it’s further confirmation that Fishburne’s Regis will be a prominent feature of the upcoming installment.
