Harry Potter is one of the most widely referenced pieces of media in modern popular culture, with no shortage of memorable lines scattered across its books and films. More than 25 years after Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone first introduced readers to the Wizarding World, many of those quotes have taken on lives of their own.
Quotes such as “Yer a wizard, Harry,” to the simple, “Always,” and, of course, spells like “Expecto Patronum!” are recognized well beyond the franchise’s most devoted fans. With eight films, seven original novels, and countless hours of dialogue to choose from, settling on a single definitive Harry Potter quote seems almost impossible. Yet the Wizarding World’s video game adaptations have their share of noteworthy moments as well, with the franchise finding its most successful modern adaptation in 2023’s Hogwarts Legacy.
And despite decades of competition, the franchise’s most iconic line may not come from Harry, Hermione, Dumbledore, Snape, or any other beloved character from the source material. Instead, it might be a single spell that Hogwarts Legacy helped introduce to a whole new generation of players.
Is This The Most Iconic Harry Potter Spell?
While the Wizarding World is packed with spells, there are really only a handful of incantations that practically anyone would recognize. Aside from “Expecto Patronum” and “Wingardium Leviosa” (not Leviosar), I’d argue that one of the franchise’s most memorable spells is the unforgettable “Flipendo!”
Of course, Hogwarts Legacy didn’t make Flipendo iconic. The Knockback Jinx has been lodged in the memories of Harry Potter gamers since the earliest video game adaptations, where players heard the incantation so frequently that it became something of an unofficial catchphrase. As such, its return in Hogwarts Legacy feels almost like an inside joke for longtime fans, except now an entirely new generation gets to experience exactly what made the spell so memorable in the first place.
Flipendo isn’t iconic because it has any major significance to the story, but more so that it’s beaten into our heads out of sheer repetition. Because it’s one of the most commonly used spells on offer in Hogwarts Legacy, it gets drilled into your memory relentlessly. And for anyone familiar with the older games, there’s an added layer of nostalgia to hearing it again after all these years.
Flipendo Originated In The Games
While Flipendo may have seen a revival in Hogwarts Legacy, the Knockback Jinx actually originated in the early Harry Potter video games rather than the original books or films. It was first introduced in Argonaut’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, or Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone for US-based gamers, first debuting on PlayStation 1 alongside Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Color editions.
Later, another Philosopher’s Stone adaptation from Warthog Games was released for GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox. In the console versions of this one, Flipendo is even the first spell Harry learns, acquiring it from a spellbook during a challenge in Ollivanders.
As its name suggests, the Knockback Jinx Flipendo is primarily used to knock creatures and objects backwards, making it particularly useful in those early games for everything from combat to pushing objects and activating magical switches. Over the years, however, the spell escaped its video-game origins and became a recurring part of the wider Wizarding World.
It has subsequently appeared in the LEGO Harry Potter games, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, Wizards Unite, Puzzles & Spells and other spin-offs, before making its nostalgic return as a Force spell in Hogwarts Legacy, making it one of the most iconic spells in the Harry Potter universe even after 25 years of countless adaptations.
