New Star Wars Crime Series Officially Arrives Next Week

There was a time when Star Wars was known exclusively for its feature films, but one could argue that there is a generation of fans most familiar with the Disney+ side of the franchise. When Disney+ launched in 2019, one of the shows that debuted alongside it was The Mandalorian, a simple yet effective bounty-hunting series starring Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin. The show leaped to new levels of popularity thanks to the inclusion of Grogu, or Baby Yoda, as he was known for many years. The Mandalorian returned for two more seasons following its premiere in 2019, and now the story of Din Djarin and Grogu will continue later this year with a new feature film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, which will be released in theaters on May 22.

However, before The Mandalorian and Grogu hit theaters everywhere, in just a few months, there’s another Star Wars release coming to help bridge the gap. One of the most popular characters in Star Wars history is Darth Maul, who first debuted in live-action in The Phantom Menace before going on to terrorize Jedi in animated shows like The Clone Wars and Rebels. Darth Maul has always been a supplementary piece in most Star Wars projects in which he’s appeared, but that’s all going to change next week with the launch of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. The new Star Wars Disney+ series will release its first two episodes on April 6, with subsequent episodes dropping in pairs until the final two episodes are released on May 4, only a few weeks before The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Let’s test your breadth of knowledge, not depth, with this sampling of your favorite shows. True fans will take no issue with these questions.

What Is ‘Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord’ About?

Maul – Shadow Lord will follow Darth Maul as he works to expand his criminal empire while also taking a new apprentice under his wing. The series will take place around one year after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, with the galaxy still dealing with the fallout from Order 66. The Empire has not yet risen to its true strengths, and there’s a power vacuum, one that Darth Maul aims to fill. Maul – Shadow Lord was written and created for TV by Lucasfilm CEO Dave Filoni, and the series stars tenured Maul voice actor Sam Witwer.

Check out the first two episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord on Disney+ starting April 6, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of the show.
