Mason Thames Reveals Filming Start & Casting Update

How to Train Your Dragon 2 is coming to theaters in 2027, and star Mason Thames just revealed when production gets underway, as well as a major casting update. After releasing three animated How to Train Your Dragon movies, Universal pulled a Disney and created a live-action remake of the first film, which was a hit at the box office.

Now plans are underway for a sequel, which is scheduled for June 11, 2027.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Grant Hermanns for Black Phone 2, Thames revealed that he’ll be heading back to the Isle of Berk to film How to Train Your Dragon 2 “in a week or two.” The actor is “really excited” to return to the set because Hiccup is his “favorite character” he’s ever played.

I start in a week or two. I’m really excited to get back into Hiccup. He’s probably my favorite character I’ve ever been able to play, so yeah, it’ll be great.

When asked for his dream casting for the role of Hiccup’s mom, who was introduced in the animated How to Train Your Dragon 2, Thames questioned whether he was able to divulge any information, so he instead said that whoever gets cast as Hiccup’s mother, “or if they’ve already found somebody,” it’ll be “great.”

What can I say? I think whatever they do, whoever they find, or if they’ve already found somebody, I think it’ll be great.

Thames wondering if he could say anything about the casting of Hiccup’s mother makes it seem like an actress has already been hired.

In the animated 2014 sequel, Hiccup and Astrid go out in search of the warlord Drago Bludvist. Along the way, they run into a dragon rider that turns out to be none other than Hiccup’s mom, Valka, whom everyone thought was dead. All this time, Valka, voiced by Cate Blanchett, has been rescuing dragons.

Only one of the voice actors from the animated films returned for the live-action remake: Gerard Butler, who plays Hiccup’s father, Stoick the Vast.

While all but one of the stars were recast for the 2025 film, it’s not out of the question for the producers to bring someone back from the original cast, which means it’s possible that Blanchett could return—or they might seek out another big name to fill those shoes.

In fact, Dean DeBlois, who has directed every single How to Train Your Dragon film, animated and live-action alike, said earlier this year that he’s already reached out to Blanchett about reprising the role of Hiccup’s mother and Stoick’s wife, even going so far as to screen the live-action film for her.

He said at the time that he was keeping his fingers crossed about this anticipated casting decision.

Blanchett returned for How to Train Your Dragon 3, subtitled The Hidden World, as Valka settled down on the Isle of Berk after all those years away from her family. So whoever plays this character, whether it’s Blanchett or someone else, in the live-action How to Dragon Your Dragon 2 will likely return for a third film.

Thames’ answer makes it seem like fans will be excited by the actress who’s about to step onto the set to play Valka. There are a lot of fans who have expressed their excitement over the possibility of Blanchett’s return. Since filming gets underway very soon, a Valka casting announcement could be revealed in the coming weeks, which will certainly light up social media.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be released in theaters on Friday, June 11, 2027.
