The Division 2 Roars Back On Steam With $3 Bargain Bin Price

The Division 2 is having a mini-renaissance on Steam this weekend thanks to a massive discount and a recent roadmap outlining the game’s future and all of the content still coming to Ubisoft’s seven-year-old loot shooter. An anniversary event has added fresh rewards alongside a new realism mode that ups the stakes and places more emphasis on headshots than gear score, making it feel more like a traditional shooter than an MMORPG.

Realism Mode is a timed event and only available in the Warlords of New York campaign. “You’ll notice the interface has been reduced, placing more emphasis on reading the world around you,” the developers write. “Ammo is recovered directly from defeated enemies, and while skills remain powerful, their longer cooldowns and added risk make them tools best saved for critical moments.”

They continue, “Gear and weapon bonuses reflect the physical nature of what you wear, with heavier pieces providing increased protection at the cost of mobility, while lighter gear favors speed and flexibility at the cost of survivability.” The mode drops alongside a new month-long battle pass with new rewards to grind for and special skins to unlock.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you Agents!

This week has been an incredible one for our beloved game!

The 10-year anniversary will be followed in April by a “Rise Up” update which is supposed to ramp up player power and overall difficulty. The year ahead is supposed to also bring PvP balancing and content updates, crossplay across consoles and PC, new classified assignments, a new incursion mission, and DLC that takes place in Central Park. Ubisoft is also continuing to test “Survivors,” an upcoming extraction mode that’s supposed to lean into the franchise’s Dark Zone survival roots.

The hype has been enough to propel The Division 2 back up the Steam charts this weekend, pumping its concurrent numbers up 400 percent higher than normal with roughly 20,000 playing simultaneously, not including those inside the Ubisoft launcher or on console. Part of that is no doubt due to the current $3 price tag, though this is far from the only time The Division 2 has been 90 percent off. You can also throw in the entire first game for just $1.40 more.

The sequel got sort of maligned back when it launched in 2019 for losing some of the grit of its predecessor and struggling to keep up with competition from loot rivals like Destiny 2 as well as the rise of battle royales like Apex Legends and PUBG. Revisit it at a low price and with zero expectations, however, and it can be a really fun shooter RPG. Loyal fans loved it so much they all but bullied Ubisoft into returning to make more content for it as well as committing to make The Division 3.

In the meantime, a mobile spin-off called The Division Resurgence will essentially port the Division 2 experience to smartphones. That game goes live on March 31.
