Sydney Sweeney‘s box office bomb just became a streaming hit.
Sweeney’s underperforming movie touting a budget of $15 million has scored big just days after the movie’s US streaming debut. The lead actor has had a massive career boost in recent years, starring in a number of high-profile films in the process. Sweeney’s latest movies include the 2024 horror movie Immaculate and the box office juggernaut thriller The Housemaid.
But this hasn’t prevented her from having a number of duds in her career recently as well. One of the most notorious of these was her role in Madame Web, a Spider-Man spinoff that grossed $100 million at the box office and won three Golden Raspberry Awards, including one for Worst Picture. But not all her underperforming films were failures.
Enter Christy, a sports biopic where Sweeney stars as Christy Salters, a professional boxer who became the most well-known boxer in the United States during the 1990s. The film follows her career, from her rise as a super welterwight champion to her husband’s attempted murder of her in 2010. Unfortunately, the movie was a box office disappointment.
Luckily, it’s since managed to find new life following its streaming debut on HBO Max over the weekend. According to FlixPatrol, Christy is now the Number 1 movie in the United States on the streaming platform. According to data from both April 12 and April 13, 2026, the movie has maintained its Number 1 spot for two days in a row.
This streaming success is in sharp contrast to the film’s box office performance. Christy earned just $2 million in theaters against a $15 million budget, making it a flop. This is despite earning nominations and honors at multiple film festivals, later becoming the Runner-Up for the Adrienne Shelly Award at the Women Film Critics Circle.
Reviews for Christy were generally positive despite the movie’s less-than-stellar theatrical performance. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie holds a 67% score based on 201 critic reviews. However, audience members who’ve seen the movie have scored it higher, having earned a 94% from viewers based on over 100 verified ratings.
Sweeney herself has now became a big name in Hollywood, something that’s no doubt aided the film’s performance. Another contributing factor may have been the start of Euphoria season 3 on April 12, which saw Sweeney return as Cassie Howard. The TV series’ return may have bolstered interest to see her onscreen, thus aiding Christy‘s performance.
It helps that, despite the box office disappointment and some lukewarm critical reception, Christy tells a very real story about a woman who rose above expectation to become a boxing champion. Her history and popularity in the 1990s is reflected in the struggles shown onscreen, alongside her own expectations to push herself to even greater heights throughout the film.
Because Sweeney delivers such a powerful performance in Christy, it’s not a surprise audiences have quickly gravitated toward the movie right after its streaming debut. Even with the movie’s lackluster box office, the film has clearly left a big enough impression for audiences to find plenty of enjoyment in the biopic’s storytelling.
