Porsche’s Key Fob Configurator Is Unhinged

Spending the afternoon fiddling with a car configurator is a great way to pass the time on a short holiday week, especially when an automaker gives you hundreds of thousands of options to choose from. Porsche’s configurator is usually pretty comprehensive, which is true of the new Cayenne EV’s. But there’s an interesting detail buried within it: A key fob configurator.

Porsche has offered custom key fobs to customers in the past, and admittedly, you can customize your fob for other models, like the Macan EV. But the options on the Cayenne EV’s key fob configurator are nuts. With that, my goal was to make the tackiest, gaudiest key fob imaginable. Based on the photos you see here: Mission accomplished.

Under the “Interior” section, where it says “Keys, Floor Mats, and Owner’s Manual Wallets,” Porsche gives you three different customizable key fob options to choose from. The first is a standard painted vehicle key with a leather pouch. Clicking the “Personalize” tab affords you 12 different—rather subdued—color options for the key itself, your choice of leather or Race-Tex for the case, and some stitching colors for the lanyard. That’s about it. That option costs you an extra $510.

For the same price, the personalized vehicle key gives you a few more hues to choose from—but it’s still nothing overly impressive. It’s not until you select the bespoke vehicle key option for $770 does your cup runneth over with colors, textures, and possibilities.

You can choose from three materials for the upper shell: Leather, Race-Tex, or paint. If you opt for paint, Porsche has a range of 16 colors to choose from, including some wacky options like Ruby Star Neo or Python Green. I chose the latter in this case.

The bottom shell has the same material and all of the same paint options—plus a few more. In this case, opting for leather on the bottom shell unlocks Aquamarine Blue, the color you see here. As far as we can tell, there are no combination limits, which is a good thing.

Once you select the colors for your outer shell, you can move on to the actual fob itself. Even here, Porsche lets you customize the upper and lower shells in leather, Race-Tex, or paint, with as many as 16 options. In the name of science, let’s go with orange leather on the top half and Guards Red paint on the bottom half. Lovely.

The key case has 12 color options for the upper portion and another 14 hues for the pinstripe. Limestone Beige and Ruby Star Neo is an excellent combination for my money. For the lanyard, you can select between Porsche or Cayenne text, with five subtle hues. For this exercise, we’ll pick Red.

The actual lanyard itself has another 12 color options, while the accent stitching is rich with 19 different color options. The end result is something Porsche probably doesn’t want us posting online.

Of course, you don’t have to take things to the extreme as we did; Porsche offers thousands of tasteful combinations to match the vibe of your next electric Cayenne. But if you really want to go nuts, you can—assuming you have an extra $770 to shell out on top of the $111,350 starting price of the new Cayenne EV.
