Pokémon Royal Sapphire Is The Ultimate Gen 3 Experience

Pokémon ROM hacks really have become one of the most exciting ways to experience the franchise, as dedicated individual developers transform the earlier games in a variety of exciting ways.

These have become notably broader in scope over the last few years, with some highly ambitious projects like Pokémon Heart & Soul showing us the potential of the franchise’s earliest throes in the iconic Johto and Kanto.

That said, ROM hacks aren’t restricted to just Generation One or Two, and there are plenty of exciting changes that can be made to releases beyond that. One of those is a brilliant interpretation of the already very good Pokémon Sapphire that transforms the base experience into one of the better games that you’re ever likely to play.

Over on Twitter, you can find the release announcement for Pokémon Royal Sapphire, a ROM hack that holds onto the mechanics of the original game, but changes pretty much everything else from there onwards.

The three starter Pokémon are now Hisui Sneasel, Hisui Qwilfish, and Galar Slowpoke, with a ton of other Pokémon like Voltorb, Electrode, Growlithe, and Arcanine changed to their regional forms. At the same time, every map has been changed to try and give players that feeling they had all those years ago when they were exploring Hoenn for the first time.

The ROM also focuses much more heavily on the storyline around Team Aqua, with their goal now to awaken Lugia, as well as Kyogre, and you’ll have to take them on directly a lot more than you do in the base game.

Under the hood, there are also a lot of tangible changes that elevate the experience and make a lot more sense than their original iterations. Many of the evolution levels for individual Pokémon have been changed and moves have had their accuracy raised significantly, largely to counter the higher difficulty you’ll find in the game.

At this point, it would be difficult to argue with the idea that this is the best way to experience Gen 3 from here on out. The quality-of-life changes alone are more than enough to make Royal Sapphire the preferable choice, but the additional gameplay alterations all make a lot of sense when you get the game in your hands.

The difficulty is also locked at a much higher level than normal, so the challenge alone should keep you playing for a lot longer than you might expect.
