New ‘Now You See Me’ Has Only Grossed a Third of Ben Affleck’s ‘Heat’ Replacement at the Box Office

The third installment of the Now You See Me franchise, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, has landed on digital streaming platforms as the lowest-grossing film of the lot. The movie has made around $60 million at the domestic box office and just over $200 million globally, while both its predecessors, Now You See Me and Now You See Me 2, made more than $300 million worldwide. The first film, which was released in 2013, remains the trilogy’s only installment to have made it past the coveted $100 million mark. Not only has the third film fallen short of its predecessors, as far as the heist movie genre is concerned, but it has also fallen tremendously short of major past hits. For instance, the movie made around half of what the lowest-grossing Ocean’s movie did, and has essentially tapped out with around a third of what Ben Affleck‘s The Town made back in 2010.

Directed by and starring the Oscar-winner, The Town was produced on a reported budget of under $40 million. It made around $150 million worldwide, of which $92 million came from domestic theaters. Following a crew of bank robbers in Boston, The Town opened to excellent reviews and is now sitting at a “certified fresh” 92% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The site’s consensus reads, “Tense, smartly written, and wonderfully cast, The Town proves that Ben Affleck has rediscovered his muse — and that he’s a director to be reckoned with.” The Town marked Affleck’s first box office hit as director, following the acclaimed thriller Gone Baby Gone. He’d go on to direct the Best Picture winner Argo some years later. Also featuring Rebecca Hall, Blake Lively, Jon Hamm, Titus Welliver, Chris Cooper, and the late Pete Postlethwaite, The Town earned Jeremy Renner his second Oscar nod in a row, following his Best Actor nomination for The Hurt Locker.

‘Now You See Me 3’ Was Designed As a Soft Reboot of the Series

Now You See Me 3, on the other hand, opened to mixed reviews. Directed by Ruben Fleischer and starring Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Lizzy Caplan, and Morgan Freeman, the movie has a 61% score on RT. The site’s consensus reads, “Getting the gang back together, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t repeats a lot of the franchise’s familiar tricks, although there’s still charm in seeing these characters pull the proverbial rabbit out of the hat.” You can now watch the movie at home, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
