Missy’s return in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 2 needs to bear massive differences from season 1 for the Young Sheldon spinoff to justify it. First Marriage season 1’s spotlight on Georgie and Mandy gave the Coopers few chances to appear in the sitcom, with Missy in particular only being in four episodes of First Marriage season 1.
Georgie’s family will nevertheless be an important part of First Marriage season 2, just like it was in season 1. With several Young Sheldon stars confirmed to return for First Marriage season 2, Mary and Missy will inevitably have the biggest roles among them. However, in Missy’s specific case, First Marriage season 2 has to avoid repeating season 1’s mistakes.
Missy’s Return In First Marriage Season 2 Cannot Repeat Her Season 1 Story
Georgie’s appearance in The Big Bang Theory season 11 established how Missy’s rebellious phase followed George Sr.’s death, making Missy’s disobedience a must in First Marriage, as it’s set months after that tragic event. However, every single time Missy was in First Marriage season 1, she misbehaved, effectively becoming a less multifaceted character and the embodiment of teenage rebellion.
Even comparing Missy’s shenanigans in Young Sheldon to those in First Marriage season 1 feels wrong, as Missy was given a good reason for acting out in the TBBT prequel series, feeling dismissed by Mary and George Sr. focusing all their attention on Georgie and Sheldon. Instead, First Marriage season 1 didn’t delve into Missy’s reasons, only showing her misbehaving.
First Marriage could never have gotten out of showing Missy’s rebellious phase, but its season 1 depiction of Missy only showed one side of the coin, never treating her as a fully-fledged character.
First Marriage season 1’s insistence on solely showing Missy’s terrible relationship with Mary, her bargaining to get something in exchange for attending family functions, and her tendency to antagonize all her loved ones reduced Missy to her negative sides. This is especially true in light of First Marriage season 1 not focusing on Missy’s redeemable qualities when featuring her.
Raegan Revord being confirmed to return in Young Sheldon’s sequel makes it imperative that First Marriage season 2 changes how it portrays Missy, or it risks making her a caricature of herself.
How First Marriage Season 2 Can Treat Missy Better Without Changing TBBT’s Canon
Missy’s bittersweet ending in The Big Bang Theory can be directly connected to her poor relationship with Mary, which has been a constant in all TBBT spinoffs, from Young Sheldon going forward, and including First Marriage. This inevitably stops First Marriage from attempting to make Missy and Mary’s bond stronger, instead having to rely on their nasty fights.
Even without being able to reconcile Missy and Mary, and taking into consideration how Georgie and Mandy are the Young Sheldon sequel’s protagonists, First Marriage season 2 should be fairer in its depiction of Missy. Giving Missy the benefit of the doubt could be easier if First Marriage season 2 starts showing Georgie and Missy’s interactions unmediated by Mary.
By embedding Missy in the story and having her spend more time with First Marriage’s main characters, including Georgie, the Young Sheldon spinoff could finally give Missy a chance to prove that she’s partially grown. Giving a more nuanced portrayal of Missy without forgetting her rebellious phase would let Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage fix her story.
