Liberty Walk Did the Unthinkable to the Honda Civic Type R

Liberty Walk has become famous for their aggressive widebody kits that turn nearly any vehicle into the definition of extreme. On just about every car they touch, you can expect the height of audacity in the design department. However, when they take on something as wild as the Honda Civic Type R, you might expect it to lose its personality under a cascade of Liberty Walk parts. Instead, they dialed it back in all the right ways.

Car modification isn’t what it used to be. In the ‘90s, we were content with simple spoilers. Then came bodyslips, cans, and cartons. Widebody kits became the next evolution of car modification, with companies like Liberty Walk leading the charge. They’re known for taking cars like Lamborghinis and Ferraris and making them look weirder.

Weird usually works for Liberty Walk, but it can take away from a car’s original styling, in the case of modifying the Honda Civic Type R. However, Liberty Walk understood that the CR-Type R already has a purpose-built physique. By adding vented fenders, subtly extending the arches, wrapping in some side skirts, and topping it all off with a massive rear wing, Liberty Walk expanded on the car’s sporty nature without going overboard.

It’s a significant change from Liberty Walk’s usual work, which shows just how far aftermarket mods have come. No longer are widebody kits used solely for maximum ugliness; today, people want mods that look intentional.

There’s an art to not going overboard with a design. You never want to hold back to the point that your creation is forgettable, but add too much and you run the risk of creating a garbage dumpster on wheels. Liberty Walk has perfected this art with their Civic Type R widebody kit. The use of carbon fiber elements makes the car pop while also keeping things lightweight.

Swapping out the suspension for air suspension and lowering the car only adds to the threatening nature of the build. The best part is you can buy individual pieces for under $1,000 or purchase the entire kit for more than $16,000. Either way, you will get plenty of wow factor whenever you drive your widened Civic Type R through town.

Hat tip to Liberty Walk for giving us a taste of what could happen if Honda ever commissioned them to design a performance car from the ground up.
