John Grisham’s ‘Suits’ Replacement Is Dominating Streaming

It comes as no surprise that USA Network‘s first show in its return to scripted programming is a legal drama. The network popularized this genre with hit shows like Suits and White Collar, and it’s back to capitalize on that winning formula. Enter The Rainmaker, a series based on John Grisham‘s novel of the same name. The show has been airing for the past two months, with the season concluding last Friday, but it has largely flown under the radar. This may be related to the mixed reception it received when the first few episodes were made available for review, as critics were unimpressed. However, it has gained a dedicated viewership over the recent weeks, as evidenced by its increased viewership on streaming platforms and recent Season 2 renewal. The Rainmaker has found a sizable audience on Amazon in the U.S., and Stan in Australia, according to streaming data that put it in the top ten chart.

“Fresh out of law school, Rudy Baylor (Milo Callaghan) goes head-to-head with courtroom lion Leo Drummond (John Slattery) as well as his own law school girlfriend (Madison Iseman). Rudy, along with his boss [Jocelyn “Bruiser” Stone (Lana Parrilla)] and her disheveled paralegal, uncover two connected conspiracies surrounding the mysterious death of their client’s son,” reads the official series description. Other cast members include P.J. Byrne as Deck Shifflet, Dan Fogler as Melvin Pritcher, and Karen Bryson as Dot Black.

When Collider’s Jeff Ewing reviewed the first few episodes, he noted that it was quite uneven, but that did not make the show a bad product. He wrote: “The Rainmaker may yet end up a fairly solid legal drama by the time the final credits roll, but at best it will prove an uneven one. In the meantime, the jury’s still out.”

Will ‘The Rainmaker’ Return for Season 2?

USA Network only recently delivered the news of a Season 2 renewal for the series. Previously, series creator Michael Seltzman revealed in an interview that he has ideas for a potential Season 2. “I have a lot of ideas for Season 2, but none of them have really calcified yet in my mind, and some of them include those characters, and some of them don’t,” he said while discussing some potential character returns. He added:

“There’s a part of me that wonders if we just completely wipe the slate clean in Season 2, and the characters who are not in trouble come back, and the other characters who were in trouble, we treat that as backstory. There’s another part of me that wonders how I could bring them back, but it’s a tricky thing. I have to think about it some more.”

Stay tuned to Collider for more updates, including more Season 2 news, and future storylines.
