Denzel Washington is one of the most talented and prolific actors not only of his generation but of all time. He’s earned 10 Academy Award nominations and two wins, with one of those nominations coming for his performance in the 2012 psychological thriller, Flight. Washington stars alongside Yellowstone veteran Kelly Reilly in the film, which follows a pilot who makes a miraculous landing that only leads to questions about his troubled personal life. In America, Flight is currently streaming for free on Pluto TV, where it’s become one of the top 10 most popular movies on the platform at the time of writing. It’s also streaming on Paramount+.
As many of Washington’s movies often are, Flight was met with immediate and overwhelmingly positive critical reception upon its release. It earned a Certified Fresh 77% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes as well as a 75% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. The film also grossed an impressive $161 million at the box office, which made it a massive financial success thanks to its modest $31 million budget. Washington’s performance as Whip Whitaker to this day is still held as one of the most accurate portrayals of alcoholism in any movie or TV show ever. MCU veteran Don Cheadle also has a role in Flight.
John Gatins wrote the script for Flight, and Robert Zemeckis stepped behind the camera to direct the film. Zemeckis is best known for his work directing the Back to the Future movies, and for his work with Tom Hanks on Forrest Gump. Zemeckis and Hanks have also worked together in more recent years on other projects, including Finch and Here. He even directed one of the most famous Christmas movies of all time, The Polar Express, which is leaving Netflix at the end of this month.
Is Denzel Washington Joining the MCU?
Late last year, while on the press tour for Gladiator II, Denzel Washington let slip that Ryan Coogler was writing a role for him in the third Black Panther movie. Washington and several Marvel executives later walked the bat, but it wasn’t until earlier this year that the rumors were officially confirmed. Coogler has also stated that Black Panther 3 will be his next movie after Sinners, and while it’s still unclear when it will be released, it’s exciting to know that a return to Wakanda is upon us.
