As the eponymous group gear up for their trickiest jobs yet, Sam Riegel has an exciting update about The Mighty Nein season 2. Executive produced by Riegel and Travis Willingham for Critical Role, the animated Prime Video series adapts the tabletop group’s second Dungeons & Dragons campaign, focusing on a ragtag group of characters who come together amid rising tensions between the Dwendalian Empire and the Kryn Dynasty over the disappearance of a powerful relic.
Continuing the group’s first-look deal with Amazon Studios after their success with The Legend of Vox Machina, The Mighty Nein has proven to be another hit for both parties, securing a rare perfect 100% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Even before the show’s release, it was confirmed that the series would run for at least two seasons, with production on both having occurred simultaneously.
Now, in an interview with ScreenRant‘s Grant Hermanns for the season 1 finale, Critical Role was asked for an update on The Mighty Nein season 2. Riegel assured the teams were all “hard at work” on the next chapter of the series, even having “already completed one or two episodes” at the time of the interview, while also sharing when he hopes the next set of episodes will release:
We are every day working on mixes and animation retakes and pickups and ADR. So they’ll be done for next year, and we hope to air it sometime next year, for sure.
If just to look at the turnaround time between the announcement of the show and its first season release, The Mighty Nein season 2 would normally take a little over two years to produce, especially given the episodes are twice as long as Vox Machina‘s. However, considering production on both seasons occurred simultaneously, Riegel’s hope for a 2026 return for the show could very well come to fruition, though Prime Video will ultimately be the one to decide such.
One of the key things the studio will likely consider as to when the next season will release is how the show has performed in its November through December window compared to Vox Machina, whose first two seasons aired in January and February while season 3 had an October 2024 run. Given the series based on Critical Role‘s first campaign didn’t return for a 2025 release as production continues on season 4, Prime Video may be looking at Mighty Nein season 1’s numbers to determine when both shows should return.
Regardless of its actual return window, the confirmation that production is coming along smoothly on The Mighty Nein season 2 should be very welcome news for fans of the series. The stakes have been getting especially high coming into the season 1 finale, with the group initially parting ways before coming back together for an unspecified job for The Gentleman. Plus, with both Willingham’s Fjord and Taliesin Jaffe’s Molly becoming deeper entrenched in their magical side, and Ashley Johnson’s Yasha yet to even join the group, there are sure to be plenty of unanswered questions that a quick-to-arrive season 2 could answer.
