Festivals: A Free Daughter of Free Kyrgyzstan (2025) by Leigh Iacobucci: When pop music becomes political risk top of pagebottom of page
Movies are, by and large, pretty good at letting their audience know when an ending is happy, or sad, or a little more complicated. Characters smile, the music swells. Characters cry, the music fades out. Characters look off into the middle distance in silence and contemplation. We let it wash over us, we understand, we accept. In most cases, especially with the good movies, we can’t imagine it any other way.Except for the times when we can. We’re not talking about movies that “should have been” one way or the other. But we are talking about movies that completely misunderstand…
If you’re anything like this author, then you probably love a good, old-fashioned horse opera. Classic television Westerns are unlike anything the genre produces for the medium today, with upright heroes, clear villains, and timeless tales that feel foundational to the Western as a whole. Of course, even our favorite classic Western TV protagonists didn’t all fit the same exact mold, though we loved each of them anyway. Whether you prefer Gunsmoke or The Lone Ranger, there is a Western TV hero for everybody, and so we took to ranking some of the very best. Of course, our list here…

SNL Hosts The Donald Trump Awards The first-ever Trump Awards took place on Saturday Night Live this week. The ceremony, obviously hosted by James Austin Johnson’s iteration of the president, honored Trump’s most memorable moments from the past year.…
If anyone was going to try to adapt Silent Hill 2, one of video gaming’s most spectacular artistic achievements, you could do worse than French stylist Christophe Gans, who directed 2006’s Silent Hill – a loose adaptation of the first game in the series. Much to fans’ chagrin, the film rewrote the game’s story, but it did maintain its eerie atmosphere and disturbingly graphic imagery. Gans’ new film, Return to Silent Hill, is in some ways a much more faithful and loving console-to-theater transformation. We still follow James Sunderland (Jeremy Irvine), a morose man drawn to Silent Hill by a mysterious letter from his missing wife, Mary…

According to a report from a high school superintendent and other school officials, a 5-year-old boy was taken from a running car by ICE agents and “used as bait” to tempt his father, a man with a legal right to be in the country, out of his house, before putting them both in an immigration lockup indefinitely. Liam Conejo Ramos, a 5-year-old student of Columbia Heights Public School, Minnesota, was in the driveway of his family’s home when ICE agents took him from the car. They walked him to his front door, where, according to the superintendent, they told the…
Grief never really goes away, but its initial impact takes many forms. Some people are paralysed for months on end. With others, it doesn’t properly hit them until later. For some, our self-medicated methods for processing loss in the early days involve pursuing complicated projects, designed to distract us from the overwhelming mental noise.Such a project is what the author Helen Macdonald threw themself into following the sudden death of their father, the renowned photojournalist Alisdair Macdonald, from a heart attack in 2007. Their experiences are detailed in the award-winning memoir ‘H is for Hawk’ from 2014. It’s worth mentioning that while…
