The legacy of the Terminator franchise is long and turbulent. Made by James Cameron in 1984, the original movie, starring Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger, became the cornerstone for the sci-fi action genre, blending high-octane thrills with futuristic tech. Cameron’s direction, coupled with intriguing performances and action spectacle, blew the minds of fans around the world. The second feature, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, was similarly appreciated by fans and critics. It further pushed the genre forward with its tech-noir feel and groundbreaking visual effects. The impact of T2 was so great that the industry started heavily featuring Computer-Generated Imagery. Both movies earned cult classic status with their dialogue frequently quoted among fans.

However, what followed was a low phase for the franchise, where it struggled to find its tone with films like Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Terminator Salvation. The movies failed to impress the audience. Nonetheless, the makers tried to revive the franchise again with Terminator Genisys and Terminator: Dark Fate, while the former felt narratively redundant, the latter brought back original stars Hamilton and Schwarzenegger and ignored all the movies in between.

Though it failed to impress with its box office gross and was largely neglected by fans, it is now redeeming itself on streaming. Terminator: Dark Fate is quickly climbing Paramount+’s top 10 list. It stands at the fourth spot on the domestic charts at the time of writing, among films like Primate, The Running Man, An Unfinished Life, and more. The Schwarzenegger-led feature arrived at the start of the month on the streamer and has instantly made its way to the charts, proving fans’ love for the franchise.

    What’s ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’ About?

Set 25 years after the events of Judgement Day, where Sarah Connor changed the future, and re-wrote the fate of the human race. We follow Dani Ramos, who is living a simple life in Mexico City with her brother and father, when a highly advanced and deadly new Terminator – a Rev-9 – travels back through time to hunt and kill her. As the Rev-9 ruthlessly destroys everything and everyone in its path on the hunt for Dani, she and her protectors are led to a T-800 from Sarah’s past that may be their last best hope.

Along with Hamilton and Schwarzenegger reprising their roles as Sarah Connor and the Terminator, respectively, the film also features Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes, and Gabriel Luna. The film divided fans but was mostly well recieved, as seen in its Rotten Tomatoes rating: 70% from critics and 82% from audiences. Made on a $196 million budget, it grossed only $261.1 million worldwide, quashing all the hopes for any sequels.

Meanwhile, you can check out Dark Fate and other movies in the Terminator franchise on Paramount+.
