Amazon Expands Health AI Access for Virtual Health Care

Amazon is expanding access to its health care virtual assistant, Health AI, the company said on Tuesday. This feature was originally available only to One Medical members, but it will now be available to most customers on the Amazon app and website. It’ll be rolled out over the next few weeks, with the goal of making it available to all US Amazon customers.

Amazon’s Health AI can answer general health care questions and provide wellness guidance for people based on their health history, medications and health conditions. To receive a more personalized response, you can grant access to your medical records.

Other functions Health AI can help out with include filling prescription refills through Amazon Pharmacy and connecting you with One Medical doctors via video, in-person appointments or messages.

An Amazon spokesperson tells CNET, “We run ongoing evaluations and automated testing to monitor the quality and safety of responses, and we continuously improve the system based on clinical review findings.”

Health AI isn’t the first chatbot to offer health guidance. In January, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Health, which similarly answers health questions, deciphers lab results and connects to your Apple Health app and medical records with your permission. Anthropic likewise introduced Claude for Healthcare, which connects to Apple Health and can help you understand and sort through health care tasks such as medical bills. Apple is also rumored to be working on its own AI health coach or assistant.

(Disclosure: Ziff Davis, CNET’s parent company, in 2025 filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.)

There have been concerns about chatbots and their use for sensitive topics such as health advice, because misguidance can cause harm. We would always caution against inputting private, sensitive information into AI bots and to take their advice with a grain of salt, since AI is known to hallucinate. Double-check with your provider about any health care advice an AI chatbot gives you.

Amazon’s virtual assistant is said to be HIPAA-compliant and intended only for medical support, not to replace a health care provider. Health AI will be able to answer questions such as: “Can you explain my recent cholesterol results and what they mean for me?” or “What allergy medications are safe with my current prescriptions?”

Health AI was co-developed with One Medical clinical leadership. A spokesperson for Amazon says that all their services, including Health AI, go through rigorous security testing, and that strict administrative, physical, and technical safeguards are maintained to protect systems and customer information, such as through encryption technology and strict controls over who can access your records.

“Before launch, we evaluated Health AI’s performance across thousands of synthetically generated conversations spanning quality dimensions including clinical safety, emergency response, and compliance,” the spokesperson said.

To come up with the prompts Health AI can answer, Amazon tested thousands of additional scenarios covering common conditions and high-risk presentations using rubrics created and calibrated by One Medical providers.

Amazon says Health AI will direct you to a human provider if it’s uncertain about any clinical recommendations. If you need specialty treatment, Health AI allows you to connect with both a provider and a specialist.

Amazon Prime members interested in using Health AI will be eligible for a free introductory offer that lets you connect with a One Medical provider for five free direct-message care consultations. These services can also be shared with family members if you have Amazon Family and either Prime for Young Adults or Prime Access.

If you use Health AI beyond those first five visits, it costs $29 for each telehealth session. If you plan on using it more than that, you can purchase a One Medical membership for $99 per year. You can add up to five family members at $66 per year each.
