OpenAI Tells Investors Enterprise Revenue Has Overtaken Its ChatGPT Consumer Business – Unite.AI

OpenAI’s finance chief told shareholders on August 14, 2026 that the company’s enterprise operation now generates more revenue than its ChatGPT-led consumer business, a crossover the company had previously forecast for the end of 2026. Sarah Friar made the disclosure in an investor meeting held days after a run of senior departures, telling attendees the two revenue lines had crossed well ahead of schedule, CNBC reported, citing a person in attendance and slides from the presentation.

“We entered the year at 60-40, but enterprise has accelerated much faster than expected and those lines have now crossed,” Friar said, according to the person, who asked not to be named due to confidentiality. “The majority of our revenue is now enterprise.”

The same materials put OpenAI’s annualized revenue run rate at $40 billion, up 20% month over month in July 2026, with business customer count growing 32% in the same period. Advertising, which OpenAI began testing in ChatGPT on February 9, 2026, is approaching a $1 billion annual run rate, Friar told the group.

The Meeting Came at the End of a Week of Executive Departures

The Friday session was scheduled before the departures that defined the week, per CNBC’s account, and was held with current shareholders. Denise Dresser, OpenAI’s chief revenue officer, stepped down on August 13, 2026, eight months into the role she took after more than a decade at Salesforce and a stint as CEO of Slack. Two days earlier, Brad Lightcap ended an eight-year run at the company. President and co-founder Greg Brockman joined Friar on Friday and thanked Dresser for building what he called the enterprise foundation.

Her successor was already named. In an August 13, 2026 announcement, OpenAI appointed Dali Rajic as chief revenue officer, arriving from Wiz, where he was president and chief operating officer through the cybersecurity company’s acquisition by Google. He previously held the same dual role at Zscaler and served as chief customer and revenue officer at AppDynamics. The announcement put OpenAI’s current reach at more than one billion weekly active users and more than two million businesses, twice the business count of a year earlier.

The enterprise numbers Friar presented sit on top of that base. OpenAI passed 1 million paying business customers in November 2025, counting organizations paying through ChatGPT for Work or consuming models through the developer platform. ChatGPT Enterprise seats grew ninefold year over year at that point, and named deployments included Morgan Stanley (MS ), Target, T-Mobile, and Commonwealth Bank.

A Forecast Pulled Forward by Two Quarters

The crossover was on the record five months ago, with a later date. When OpenAI closed a $122 billion funding round on March 31, 2026, at a post-money valuation of $852 billion, it stated enterprise made up more than 40% of revenue and was “on track to reach parity with consumer by the end of 2026.” Friar repeated that parity-by-year-end guidance publicly earlier this year. The August 14 disclosure moves the milestone up by roughly two quarters, against a revenue base that stood at $20 billion-plus annualized at the end of 2025, according to Friar’s own January 18, 2026 business review.

Friar also described a shift in how enterprise customers buy. The era of what she called tokenmaxxing, where companies let employees run up unconstrained AI bills, is over; procurement is now organized around cost per unit of intelligence. She pointed to OpenAI’s newest model as 54% more efficient on agentic coding tasks, alongside recent price cuts across the model suite. Brockman, asked about open-source Chinese competition, said there is a misunderstanding about open source being cheaper, per the CNBC account. Asked about IPO timing, the executives said they could not discuss it, citing the company’s confidential SEC filing.

What OpenAI’s Own Data Says About the Shift

Two days before the investor meeting, OpenAI published its own enterprise usage research on August 12, 2026, which documents where the enterprise growth is coming from. Codex, the company’s coding agent, generated 64% of combined Codex and ChatGPT output tokens among enterprise customers as of June 2026, evidence that business usage has moved from question-answering toward delegated, multi-step work.

The same research shows adoption spreading beyond engineering. Since February 2026, weekly active enterprise Codex users grew 108-fold in legal, 41-fold in sales, 41-fold in recruiting, and 26-fold in marketing, against fivefold growth in engineering. The top 10% of firms by usage intensity now generate 8.3 times as many output tokens per active user as typical firms, a gap that has tripled since January 2026.

The consumer engine behind the other half of the business remains the distribution channel: OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly active users and over 50 million subscribers in March 2026. Advertising is the newest monetization layer on that base. The ads test that began in the United States in February was announced in late March as expanding in the coming weeks to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and reached the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea on August 11, 2026, with Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education tiers remaining ad-free. Whether the near-$1 billion advertising run rate Friar described sits inside the consumer or enterprise line was not specified in the meeting account.
