Square Enix has released a new download for its upcoming Zelda-inspired RPG, and you can claim it for free now. The studio behind Final Fantasy, Mana, recent releases in the Dragon Quest series, and Kingdom Hearts, Square Enix has been responsible for a plethora of classic and lesser-known RPGs, as well as publishing titles like Just Cause 3 and the Tomb Raider reboot.
Now, the studio is venturing into new territory with the release of a brand-new RPG. Although it doesn’t come from any existing IP or series, it’s clearly drawing quite a bit on Zelda with its approach to combat, dungeons, and puzzling – and you can try it at no cost right now.
A free prologue demo for The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is now available on Switch 2, PC (via Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S (spotted by RPG Site). This will allow you to play through the earliest chapters of the game before it comes out on June 18 — and yes, you’ll be able to transfer your progress over to the full release.
The Adventures of Elliot is a new HD-2D action RPG that borrows quite a bit from 2D Zelda. First, it’s an action RPG: unlike other Team Asano HD-2D titles like Octopath Traveler or the Live A Live remake, which are turn-based, this one has you swinging swords (and a variety of other weapons) in real time.
Visually, it’s a little reminiscent of old-school Mana games: lush greenery in 2D environments, with that undeniable Square Enix style. It also takes cues from 2D Zelda with its top-down view – but more important is how Zelda appears to have inspired its gameplay.
As Elliot, you’re charged with exploring the ruins outside the last surviving city, a series of dungeons full of monsters and puzzles to be completed. You’ll have access to seven different weapons, each of which has a different ability that may help you in combat, or maybe with completing puzzles. You’ll find treasure, including magicite fragments that let you upgrade your weapons, all throughout the world.
In addition, you’ll be followed by a companion fairy (sound familiar?) with her own set of abilities that can aid you in combat. Additionally, the game features a series of Ages, like historic eras similar to those featured in Zelda: Oracle of Ages, or the timeskip in Ocarina of Time. Depending on what Age you’re in when you explore a dungeon, it might be slightly different from the same dungeon in a different Age.
The Adventures of Elliot is out on June 18, but the demo is free on a multitude of platforms now. Although it’s a new property and thus a bit of a big swing for Square Enix, its Zelda-style dungeons have already attracted a lot of interest.
