2026’s One Cyberpunk Series Bigger Than Neuromancer Lands Official Prime Video Release Date

Anime fans in 2026 are already eating well with multiple anticipated returns coming and going, including Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 and glorious resurgences of the Isekai Big Three. But one particularly hot arrival is Dandadan and Devilman Crybaby studio Science SARU’s take on the seminal 1989 cyberpunk classic, Masamune Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell manga.

The aptly-named reboot, The Ghost in the Shell, is easily among the top most anticipated arrivals of 2026 for anime and indeed cyberpunk fiction. With other anticipated titles like the long-awaited Apple TV+ series based on William Gibson’s Neuromancer already vying for the attention of fans of the genre’s earliest days, The Ghost in the Shell’s arrival date on Prime Video has been a key detail for its loyal fans. Now, alongside a third promo video, the anime finally locks down its exact release date via their official X (formerly Twitter) account.

The Ghost In The Shell Confirms Summer 2026 Release Date

As confirmed via the third promo alongside a brand-new poster, character visuals, and synopsis, The Ghost in the Shell’s new anime confirms a July 7, 2026 release date. The series will stream on Prime Video, part of a recent trend of excellent acquisitions for the streaming service in addition to the Fist of the North Star remake and Nippon Sangoku. With a retro flair and a strong adherence to Shirow’s character designs, The Ghost in the Shell is one of the most stylish anime to join the Summer 2026 roster.

Science Saru Promises A Solid Return To This Classic Anime’s Roots

The Ghost in the Shell anime poster

The Ghost in the Shell is more than a visual overhaul resembling the anime output and stylings of the ’80s and ’90s, with disproportionate features, big eyes, and bigger hair for the most prominent characters. Science SARU’s new anime appears to retell the story first depicted in the classic 1995 movie. The series is set to adapt the original 1989-1991 run of Masamune Shirow’s series, as a love letter to the titanic influence Kodansha’s publishing house has had on the cyberpunk genre, with the likes of Akira as additional examples.

The anime’s social media account and official website teases its synopsis, featuring protagonist Motoko Kusanagi as she’s joined by Batou among the Public Security Section 9 team, or Shell Squad. Together, the team tackles cybercrimes while the nefarious Puppet Master lingers in the shadows in this cyberpunk vision of near-future 2029 Japan, with The Ghost in the Shell possibly being the most faithful adaptation of Shirow’s manga to date.
