Art-Pop Optimism Wrapped in ’80s Synth Glow

China Aster is the solo project of Guernsey-born, London-based Josh Moore. Launched in 2022 with debut single “If I Could Dance,” the project blends art-pop ambition with philosophical undertones.

The name China Aster is lifted from a debt-ridden character in Herman Melville’s The Confidence Man, hinting at the literary and conceptual layers beneath the glossy surface. Moore studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths, drawing inspiration from utopian thinkers such as Karl Marx, Ernst Bloch, and Nikolai Fyodorov — influences that quietly inform his lyrical themes of hope, rationality, memory, and political imagination.

Described by BBC Introducing as “very fresh and new,” and praised by Louder Than War for being “stuffed with pop hooks, ’80s synths, cut glass vocals and lyrical wit,” China Aster positions itself as “a campaign for lucid daydreaming.” Sonically, the project channels the art-pop spirit of John Maus, MGMT, and Grimes, alongside the sheen and sophistication of ’80s icons like The Style Council, Cocteau Twins, and Talking Heads.

With support from Louder Than War (“single of the month”), When the Horn Blows, The Most Radicalist, and BBC Introducing (“track of the week”), and collaborations including Oliver Marson and mixing engineer Joshua Rumble (Black Country, New Road), momentum continues to build.

“Over the Moon” encapsulates China Aster’s blend of lush synth-pop textures and sharp lyrical insight. Driven by shimmering ’80s-inspired production and crystalline vocals, the track feels buoyant yet thoughtful — emotionally uplifting without losing its intellectual edge.

The melodies are instantly memorable, while the synth arrangements evoke a retro-futurist discotheque atmosphere. There’s a sense of escapism woven through the song, but it’s grounded in intention — optimism not as naïveté, but as choice.

    Why it is trending

With art-pop continuing to thrive among audiences seeking both substance and style, “Over the Moon” taps into a renewed appetite for emotionally resonant, synth-driven music.

China Aster’s growing media support and distinctive conceptual framework give the project depth beyond surface-level nostalgia. As retro aesthetics meet contemporary commentary, “Over the Moon” positions China Aster as one of the UK’s most intriguing voices in forward-thinking pop.
