YouTuber Puts $10 Grand Bounty On Marvel Vs. Capcom Rollback

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was a sweet expansion on an already excellent fighting game. An inspired roster of characters and dynamic combat made it a welcome addition to the Capcom crossover series. The game that followed? Less so. But if Infinite has any advantage over its predecessor, it’s a rollback netcode patch, making online matches far smoother. Fighting game YouTuber Maximilian “Dood” Christiansen wants a similar treatment for Ultimate, and is willing to pony up the cash to see it.

“I want to do something special,” says Christiansen in a recent video. “I want to use this as an opportunity to give a special shout-out, if not a request. Before, we’ve done a lot for the modding scene for Marvel vs. Capcom, I’m willing to put my money where my mouth is. Maybe, just maybe, we can move beyond this Parsec era of Ultimate Marvel 3 online.”

‼️A $10,000 BOUNTY WAS JUST SET BY @maximilian_ FOR THE IMPLIMENTATION OF ROLLBACK NETCODE FOR ULTIMATE MARVEL VS CAPCOM 3!!!

Christiansen says he’s putting a $10,000 bounty on anyone who can add rollback netcode to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. While many fighting games, including Capcom’s, have included rollback or had rollback modded into them since 2011, the MVC3 games are the lone entries in the series without it. The previous Marvel vs. Capcom games had more recent ports to work with.

In simplest terms, rollback is a predictive netcode where the system makes safe assumptions about the player’s next move. When incorrect, this netcode has subtle ways to “roll back” the error. Rollback has been around for decades, but began being introduced in fighting games like the 2006 version of Street Fighter II and SkullGirls. It is the player’s choice for smoothing out lag issues in a genre most sensitive to it.

Unfortunately for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, it belongs to one of the fussiest console generations to emulate. That’s likely the biggest component to why a game as well-liked as Ultimate hasn’t received a patch from fans while the less beloved Infinite has. Christiansen says stranger miracles have happened, and if a few grand are needed to sweeten the pot, so be it. “I’d be willing to put my money towards it to help support this community,” says Christiansen, “to help support this game for the long run.”
